Since 2017, Jefferson Area Harm Reduction has worked to help folks in Charlottesville and surrounding counties take charge of heir health. We do this by providing Naloxone, a live-saving medication that reverses opiate overdoses. Our focus is on Charlottesville, Albemarle, Nelson, Buckingham and Fluvanna counties, but we're sent supplies as far as Richmond and Lynchburg.
The folks we serve have reported that at least 50 overdoses have been reversed with the Naloxone we have provided, although we expect the actual number is much higher. We also provide clean syringes, which help stem the spread of communicable diseases such as Hepatitis, HIV and others. They also help prevent life-threatening abscesses and endocarditis infections. We also provide safer-use kits, which promote public health and help keep the people we serve use as safely as possible.
Non-profits we work with include the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition, a Roanoke based group that organizes with local Harm Reduction groups across the state, and the Chris Atwood Foundation, which is dedicated to saving lives from opioid overdose and supporting recovery from addiction.
Covid-19 has affected all of us, including the people we serve, our group, and the non-profits we work with. So far, we have been able to provide Naloxone, a lifesaving, opioid reversing medication without interruption, although there has been times we were down to ONE kit. We are now dangerously low on syringes, and we are down to only one size of syringes. We usually try to provide 3 or 4 options. We are also now out of safer use kits.
Since the onset of Covid-19, demand for our services has increased, but access to supplies has decreased, leaving us in a fraught position. $2,000 would allow us to stay above water and continue providing Naloxone, syringes, and safer use kits for an estimated 3 to 6 months with our current demand. We expect our demand to increase as our group continues to grow. Please consider donating to our cause.
