Help Fund a Grassroots Racism Exhibit For Families

We are a collective of passionate, laid-off museum folk with very specific skills. We have an idea of how to help families talk about race. The only resource we have is time. We need YOU!
About us: We are Black, biracial, Latinx, white, queer, straight, non-binary, cisgender, disabled, able-bodied. We are exhibit developers, exhibit designers, educators, facilitators, researchers, writers, anti-racist practitioners, and fundraisers.
Our idea: Use an intersectional, anti-racist lens to create an interactive traveling exhibit--to be hosted by museums across the country--that sparks and supports conversations about race among all families.
What we’re asking: Money to pay BIPOC team members a stipend to develop the exhibit concept*. We are hoping to raise $40,000 so that we can pay 20 people a $2,000 stipend for working 5 hours a week for approximately six months. YOU IN?

What we know: Preliminary research shows 1) parents and other caregivers are hungry for tips and tools to help them talk about race with their children and families (let’s face it, what we’ve been doing ain’t cutting it), 2) museums and community centers across the country WANT to book an exhibit like this, and 3) anti-racist resources are readily available.
The Plan: In September we launched a multi-month concept development process with about 30 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) laid off/furloughed/underemployed museum workers. We will follow a structured exhibit development process to brainstorm original ideas that achieve our goals. Then we’ll produce beautiful concept sketches, written narratives, conceptual floor plans, a preliminary budget, sample graphics and scripts, and preliminary plans for facilitation, staff training and marketing. The Exhibit: This exhibit will be completely original and like nothing any of us have seen before. It must be totally interactive, flexible and responsive to the times. It will feature first-person stories, original art, and engaging, modular components. It will be provocative and supportive and invite exhibit-goers to contribute their own stories. It will help families explore their biases and talk about the truth of systemic racism.
*White team members are working pro bono.
