Support Shipibo Youth with Dance Therapy!

Help support Shipibo youth to participate in Biodanza workshops, to provide healing spaces and train a future generation of certified dance therapists in the Amazon!

Alianza Arkana  is excited to announce the first-ever Biodanza workshop series in Pucallpa, Peru. Biodanza is a holistic dance and healing technique which uses movement, song, music and interactive group work to help deepen self-awareness, remove emotional blockages, and strengthen community.

My name is Macarena Arias, and with Alianza Arkana I’ve been working with Shipibo youth for more than two years in the Ucayali region in the Peruvian Amazon. I’ve seen how effective artistic techniques can be with helping youth address unresolved personal and cultural trauma and emotions -- it’s crucial for youth to have feeling-based communication techniques at their disposal in order to empower themselves to live happier and more fulfilled lives.

Empowerment work isn’t easy. It requires us to address deeply rooted feelings regarding self esteem and confidence, domestic, intergenerational, and historical trauma, gender, colonization, and other power dynamics. When I learned about dance therapy, I decided to try it out with my youth groups. I can attest that movement is one of the most powerful healing tools out there. From various somatic psychology schools, we know that many of our emotions, traumas, and discomforts are contained in the physical body, and that movement is an effective way to facilitate transformational and transcendent healing, allowing unconscious emotions to surface and be addressed.

Many westerners come to this region of Peru to seek healing from Shipibo traditional medics. The results that stem from the training and prowess of these healers is life changing, and has allowed for many to lead better, healthier, more authentic lives. I want to make a call to all of our brothers and sisters who have been healed by the Shipibo community, as well as those who haven’t, but are still allies to the indigenous people, to consider helping youth heal, and lead better, healthier and more authentic lives as well.

We are asking for $1,600 USD, which will be used to fund four intensive dance therapy sessions. Your donations will fund workshop logistics, and instructor fees so that our Biodanza instructor can come from Lima and share his expertise with us, while Shipibo and other locals learn for free. These four sessions will not only provide a unique healing space, but will also help participants continue their training to be certified as therapists.. This initiative will pave the way for the first generation ever of Shipibo dance therapy practitioners in the Ucayali region. The impacts of these workshops have major potential to ripple throughout local indigenous communities, and with your support we hope to bring this mission to life!
