Chance to Work with Naomi Klein

Friends:

I have been granted the most incredible opportunity this summer – a residency at The Banff Center for the Arts in Alberta, Canada to work on my new book with Naomi Klein and other environmental journalists.

I’m coming to you because I need help to get there. I’ve gotten a half scholarship for the program, but I still need to raise enough to cover the remaining costs. Hopefully, whatever I raise here will be joined by additional funding from grants. I’ve applied for several during the last few months.

As you might know, this year I was awarded a Social Justice News Nexus Fellowship in environmental justice journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. I’ve used this fellowship as a place to start work on a new book.

The project is non-fiction, and it deals with how the personal is changed by the global environmental crisis we’re facing. It is about parenting a child with special needs during an extinction crisis, and about writing about local and global flooding while kidney disease causes you to drown from the inside out.  It is about fear and loss and how to find hope when the pressures of social vulnerability feel insurmountable.

The global warming crisis is worse than ever, the new administration is routinely destroying funding, access to information, and protections for the environment generally. Specifically, it is forbidding mention of global warming, or any acknowledgement that the crisis is real. We know it is real, and my work resists the current agenda.

If you believe that strong journalism and nonfiction writing is key to keeping environmental justice and global warming at the top of our national conversation, take this chance to support my travel to Banff. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, a chance to take my career, writing, and voice to a new level of exposure and support. But, in addition, this is your chance to micro-fund a journalist and writer working to tell the truth about our planetary crisis.

Here are just some of the topics of my previous work in environmental justice nonfiction and memoir: the People's Climate March , frog extinction , the power of water , grief and loss , children's literature , the perils of fundraising, and an essay in the book The Time After

Thank you so much for whatever support you can give.
