Meet Forrest
Forrest is currently 25 years old and living at his parents home in Springfield, Oregon. Forrest was living in Portland, Oregon, working a construction job when he found out about his illness. Initially, he was handling his job, but as the disease progressed and the side effects of the various drugs increased – he was working less and less. He has been relying on others (and parents) to help with his financial obligations.
Diagnosis
T-Cell Large Granular Lymphocytic Leukemia (a rare form of blood cancer) and Autoimmune Hepatitis (related to his inflamed liver). This cancer is not only rare, but it is chronic and incurable. Forrest has been dealing with this for over 2 years now, but it will haunt him for the rest of his life. If they were able to get Forrest into remission, he could live a fairly normal life.
Before Illness
He was progressing in his construction job, had attended community college, hanging out with friends and girlfriend, and loved to hunt.
Journey
Process started March 2015 with a regular doctor and escalated to OHSU in the Fall of 2015. He’s tried 5 different medicines’ unsuccessfully for 18 months. He has begun chemotherapy as of September 2017. He’s lost roughly 100 pounds which started a year or two before diagnosis. The last six months have been particularly tough – the extreme fatigue, body aches, cramps, nausea, and continued weight loss. With no job to support himself, he is relying solely on family and friends. He was told Chemo was his next option and that would begin in September 2017. At that point, he moved in with parents full time to focus on treatment and recovery. He currently has insurance, but it isn’t paying 100% of his medical bills. Mom and dad have been trying to pay most of those bills out of pocket, but they are now feeling the financial burden of this horrible disease.
Cost
His monthly infusion is $7k and Forrest is booked for a minimum of 5 through the end of the calendar year. Plus doctor visits and weekly blood draws. This number doesn't take into account any complications Forrest could possibly face.
