Help For Troy

Troy Kane was a vigorous and healthy 48 year old male. In June 2017,  he was diagnosed with Stage IV terminal colon cancer that has spread outside his colon to encompass most of his abdomen. It has also spread to part of his liver.

One surgery has already been performed. The cancerous mass was too big for removal. The doctors feared rupturing and spreading the disease even farther, so currently Troy is undergoing chemotherapy to reduce the mass in his abdomen to a manageable size for future removal, along with the cancer on his liver. In the meantime, the doctors rerouted his colon and inserted a stoma to attach a colostomy bag.

He suffers the most in the few days following each chemo treatment. The side effects include severe fatigue, nausea, vomiting, sores in the mouth and nose, nose bleeds, severe pain in the legs, and severe neuropathy in his hands. At diagnosis, Troy had lost over forty pounds, but despite the chemo he has still managed to gain back all the weight he lost. He is unbelievably courageous and stoic, and is determined to fight! He’s also one of the lucky ones who has managed to keep his hair. Don’t let his appearance fool you. He hides it all very well.

The most recent report from his oncologist is that he will need to permanently continue chemo following surgery for the sole purpose of prolonging his life; it is not a cure. His condition is fatal. He cannot lift more than 10 pounds for fear of rupture, and because of his chemo, he is not allowed to drive, operate heavy equipment, or work because his critical thinking and judgment are impaired by the cancer drugs. He is permanently disabled.

Troy had to go on short term disability from his job. That has now run out and his company has no long term disability coverage. He now has no income or insurance. Luckily, he can live with his mother, Kathy Chalmers, so he has a roof over his head, but he has other expenses like the $500 a month that it will cost to keep his  health insurance  through COBRA.  Kathy paid the first month of his COBRA but can't afford to continue the payments.  He still has surgeries ahead, continual chemo, MRIs, etc. His unpaid medical bills are stacking up - a major stressor that only makes everything harder for both Troy and his mother.

Battling cancer is bad enough. All Troy has left is peace of mind while he fights the good fight. The gift of kindness and love is so very precious. Please, won’t you help? Donate whatever you can afford. Any amount is appreciated and is needed urgently! All funds donated will be used to pay for Troy’s medical, health, and minor living expenses. We will post periodic photos and updates on Troy’s condition to keep you informed.

Thank you so very much!
