Help for the Farmers of Los Altos de Ocotal

Donation protected
The tiny village of Los Altos de Ocotal is in the western foothills of Nicaragua, about 90 minutes away from the nearest town of El Sauce. There are about 200 people who live there, and they are all farmers. They raise beans, corn, wheat, and millet, and they have a small coffee cooperative that they try and use to make a little money for the village. The rains from Hurricane Eta demolished the only road in and out of the village, and has completely destroyed all their crops—both those they use for food, and the coffee they need to sell. The only way that villagers can get to El Sauce to buy food is on horseback or on foot. Even motorcycles can't get around the damage to the road.  When Hurricane Iota bore down on them, it destroyed a lot of the road within about two miles of the community.

My name is Christa Sadler. I live in Flagstaff, Arizona, but I have worked with this community for more than 10 years, beginning with house-building projects in 2008. I have come to know and love this community, and I have so much respect for these folks; they are some of the kindest, most generous and hardest working people I have ever met. They are in a really terrifying place right now, with little food, and little money to buy food even when they can get to town. I am raising money for the families in Los Altos de Ocotal to at least be able to feed themselves now that they have lost their crops.

I have two contacts there that I trust completely: Yamilda and Karina. We have identified the 43 families in the community. They will buy food and supplies and create a package for each family. We will also buy corn and beans to plant in the spring, so that they can replace what was lost this year.

Things don't cost much in Nicaragua, so any small amount you can provide will help. The money will be sent to them via MoneyGram (they pay in dollars, which allows my contacts to get the best exchange rate somewhere else in town).  This will provide an immense amount of hope. There is not a single family in the community that did not lose their crops. Thanks for your help, and please share this fundraiser with anyone you know who might be able to donate.
