Help for Refugee Family

Hello Dear Friends,
As some of you may know, I have been helping a refugee family from Afghanistan for the last year. The family includes a mother and five daughters aged 7 to 17. The family left Afghanistan in 2001 and lived in Pakistan for 15 years before coming to the US. Lutheran Services helped them find a home in Raleigh and prepare for life here, but the charity’s resources are limited and must be put towards new families arriving regularly.
The mother and the oldest daughter have been working at various jobs since they arrived, so they can be financially independent. Unfortunately, the mother’s company shut down in June, then she became ill in August and had to have emergency surgery, which impacted her search for a new job.
The oldest daughter is attending high school and working part-time to support the family. She may have to drop out and work full-time if they cannot find another source of income soon. Even though she only came to the US one year ago, she is taking Honor and AP classes and excels at her studies. Her younger sister is also taking Honors and AP classes, and hopes to be a surgeon one day. Their dreams may have to be put on hold if they need to leave school to support their family.
I continue to be very impressed by this family’s strength and motivation to excel in the face of adversity, I have supported them for quite a while on my own, but it is not possible for one person to help a family of six that fell on hard times.
Right now, they need help with rent, utilities, and medical expenses not covered by Medicaid. They also need to put money towards buying a car and car insurance.
