Hi, my dog Bertie who is nearly 2 has been the bravest dog and for the last 14 months has been battling an immune mediated condition called immune mediated meningomyelitis. He has swelling around his brain and spinal cord which causes him to have seizures and he is medicated daily for these. He has had 5 rounds of chemotherapy so far and is doing so well. Bertie is my absolute world, originally he was training to become my therapy dog for autism and adhd but I retired him due to his health. We are very lucky that he has an incredible neuro team and our insurance has covered and continues to cover quite a lot of his medical costs. 

7 weeks ago I thought I was going to be saying goodbye to my best friend and my whole world, my safe space, my comfort at night and reason I get up in the morning. All of a sudden 7 weeks ago he couldn't stand at all, he was sqealing in pain and after rushing him back to the specialists it was finally discovered he had a huge abscess in his shoulder muscle, it had likely been there for months. The damage it caused has been massive but he's been as brave as always and has battled on. 

Due to him being severely immunocompromised from chemotherapy and daily immunosuppressants his wound from the abscess needed changes and washouts 3 times a week. He was admitted for 6 weeks as originally he was needing it doing daily. He came home a week ago and I've been doing the 140 mile round trip since then. I pay for his epilepsy medication out of pocket at £200 a month so I can save his insurance allowance for inpatient admissions as he has used a lot of his allowance for this policy year. The petrol costs are huge now so on top of his medications (he has 6 different meds a day) and food costs (he also has chron's disease so is on a very specific diet) I am really struggling financially. I have tried for 14 months to not ask for help but I am now at crisis point. I am asking if anyone can donate even a couple of pounds to help me get to my target to try and take some pressure off his appointments. I know everyone is struggling at the moment but even if you can just share our page me and Bertie would be hugely grateful. 
 
November 2025- Bertie has just had a 10th round of chemotherapy but we seem to now be making progress in terms of his flare ups being less severe. He is going to be having 3 weekly cycles of chemo for at least 6 months. Each time he'll be away for 5 days. The financial strain is still huge due to the very regular trips still on top of his other health needs. He deserves the world and I couldn't be prouder to call him mine, he's the most brave and resilient boy.

April 2026- Nearly a year on since I started this fund at what was the most scary and heartbreaking time. Bertie has just finished his 15th round of chemo to keep his immune system suppressed. He amazes me every day, I couldn't be prouder of him and he continues to show me how resilient and brave he is. He will continue having 3 weekly chemotherapy for now and I have no doubt he'll face each round with as much positivity as always. 
 
July 2026- Just over a year after setting this page up and Bertie has just had his 17th round of chemotherapy. He started a new oral immunosuppressant a few weeks ago that he takes daily with the aim being to help the part of his immune system that is targeting his skin and making it sore, mainly his paw pads and nail beds. He is doing brilliantly and still has the biggest love for life and just grins or wags his tail through most days. Just when I think he couldn't make me any prouder he does!
