Help for Girls in Northern Ghana

OUR MISSION
We are a group of girls working under a Canadian registered charity on a mission to transform girls living in poverty into leaders of change. We believe that when you create a female leader, you not only change her life, but you are changing the lives of everyone who will be impacted by the change she leads.

NORTHERN GHANA
The majority of the population in Northern Ghana are farmers, living off the land. Weather conditions cause the region to experience severe water shortages, and food security is a major issue. Gender inequality drives economic inequality in Ghana. The women’s unequal position in society means that they have less access to power, money, land, as well as education, healthcare and political spaces. Ghana has a relatively easy culture to work with, limited bureaucracy, and basic functioning infrastructure, making it an ideal environment to create positive change.

CREATE CHANGE CHARITY
The charity we work under is called Create Change, founded in 2008 by Shannen O'Brien. For the majority of her adult life, Shannen has been working to solve gender inequality, specifically in Ghana’s northern region. Upon seeing the corruption, inefficiency, and lack of participation of people living in poverty in development, she decided to start a charity dedicated to transparency that would include the views of young, marginalized women in its program design.
