Help for Carol in a unfair fight

Such a bad break for Carol. About 10 years ago it started with difficulty with walking up and down stairs. Then came difficulty with walking in general without a cane. Shortly thereafter in June 2010 my Mom was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). From that point on it has been a slow and excruciating regression for her and our family. Walking with a cane soon gave way to needing to use a walker. The purchase of two lift recliners became necessary to aid her in getting to a standing position. As the MS has taken a tighter grip on her life every day, the ability to walk at all (walker assisted or otherwise) has transition to harrowing balancing acts while she navigated from a chair to wheelchair. Her lack of mobility has led to multiple blood clots,severe atrophy in both legs, edema, and severe depression. To say she has a poor quality of life would be an understatement. She suffers from periodic MS “attacks”. Essentially she spikes a high fever, loses some cognitive ability, and the lower half of her body loses all mobility. These attacks had been happening several times a year for the last five years. Each time necessitated a stay in the hospital and a long stay at a rehab facility to try and get some mobility back. Each time she came home, she was slightly worse off than when she went in. Just the wicked nature of the disease. Most recently, in February 2018, she fell and broke her ankle while trying to get out of her chair. She has been in the hospital and rehab ever since. She’s just not been able to make progress. The physical effort that is needed to successful complete rehab is just simply beyond her ability at this point. We are now faced with the reality that her stay at rehab has to come to an end. She has accrued $64,000 in bills that insurance won’t pay for. We are going to need to purchase a Hoyer Lift just to get her out of bed or a chair. The ONLY way she will ever be able to get out of the house will be to purchase a handicap transport van.   The more you read and the more you research on this disease, the more you realize how much is unknown. It is a wicked illness that has no cure. Every day presents a struggle more difficult than the next. Imagine yourself fretting to use the bathroom because you’re afraid you might fall and break your hip, leg, or worse. Any little bit you can donate would go a long way to helping give her a little piece of her life back.
