Our dear friend, Fiona Vanderkamp, has recently been diagnosed with a Stage IV, inoperable malignant brain tumor. Inspired by her strength and compassion, Fiona’s friends and co-workers are reaching out to seek the generosity of those who know her, to help her family through this difficult time.
Fiona is only 53 years old. She is a dedicated mother to five beautiful children: Josie (30), Chelsea (28), Kathleen (26), Stephen (19) and Julianna (17). Her diagnosis came suddenly, on a family trip to Guelph, and as a result, she is being treated at a hospital in Toronto, away from her home, family and friends in Ottawa. Josie, Stephen and Julianna have been traveling back and forth to Toronto every weekend, and we imagine that the cost of doing so has begun to add up. (Groceries, money for accommodation in Toronto, transportation costs, etc. ) Chelsea and her fiancé Garrett have opened their doors to Fiona, as she doesn’t have the mobility to return home to her two storey house. Kathleen has taken a leave from work to take care of her during the day as she’s not able to be left alone since she has aphasia and mobility issues. We would like to help by setting up a fund that would alleviate some of this financial burden.
Fiona is a loving mother, teacher and friend. She gives everything to her family, her friends and her students. Those who know the long-time teacher at Robert Hopkins Public School, have seen how she pours her heart and soul into her job. She is often the first one in the building and the last one out. Known as ‘Mrs. V.’ to her students, she has all the time in the world to join countless committees, plan school wide events and make sure her students are being challenged to do their very best. After years of helping others, Fiona and her family need our help.
