Help The Mooney's Fight Racism in NM

Donation protected
In 2017 Daniel and Cristina Mooney purchased over 60 acres of land with the intention of homesteading and creating community spaces like greenhouses and a community center to continue offering healing, as they have been since 2013. Within months of arriving in New Mexico in 2017 and learning how to live on raw land, the Mooney's were targeted by a white, racist militia in the area. This militia spread lies about the Mooney’s and made false claims about them being drug traffickers and meth dealers. Since then, the Mooney's have fought criminal charges as a result of constant false criminal reports filed against them, they are currently representing themselves in an ongoing civil case against an illegal/unlicensed real estate company who refused their payments just to kick the Mooney's out of the area, they have had a dog poisoned by this militia & their associates, and life has been an ongoing stream of the Mooney's trying their best to stay above water while still working towards their dreams.

The Mooney’s are in need of funding assistance for a high priority deadline to be able to stay on the properties. On August 11th a Judge in Cibola County ruled that we are to pay an illegal real estate company over $23,000. Why, you ask? 2 years ago this company was hellbent on getting the only brown people of color with dreadlocks out of this rural area of New Mexico. But why, you ask? We thought you would. Here’s why… (1) We are the only brown and black people of color within a 200-mile radius that were in the position to own land (2) the amount of land we’re fighting for is more than any other white landowner in the subdivision and (3) we are among the youngest people who own land in the subdivision, and among all the “young people” we are STILL the ones in the position to own the most land.

During the hearing when this order was made by Judge we were told that the fact that the real estate company is unlicensed and doing business illegally didn’t matter and was not a concern. Additionally, no proof or itemized list of the total amount they were asking for was provided. We’ve calculated what would be owed had we not had payments rejected and it does not exceed $20,000 but the Judge was not interested in hearing any kind of logic and wrote us off because we did not have a lawyer to represent us. The real estate company gave the Court a “rough estimate” on how much is due and without any proof at all POOF they were awarded what they want, but not what they are owned.

We have shifted the original focus of this GoFundMe to focus on raising the $23,000+ before September 1st since the Judge told us there was absolutely NOTHING we could to do change the deadline date, which is a total of 20 days, this goes against most “reasonable” time periods for payment. All in the conspiracy to help this real estate company not only violate civil rights but use the motions of the court to get more money than they are rightfully owed. We plan to fight that tooth and nail. We plan to file complaints against the Judge and all the lawyers involved who are not being held accountable for their crimes against our human and civil rights.

We overstated that this is a large amount to raise and we want to assure you that we have expended every single personal resource to be able to afford all the legal costs of fighting several false criminal complaints and defending themselves in their civil fight for their land. We work full time, we run a farm full time and everything we do here and have done for the past 4 years had been with the full focus of safety and community for black and indigenous people of color. Many have suggested we leave, give up the fight and go somewhere else. We have been told that is not our purpose. We are here to rid the area of anyone with hate in their heart, if that means going after everyone who is conspiring to kick us, and other brown people, out of the area, then THAT is what we plan to do. And you can go to the bank with that!

We appreciate any size donation you can give and ask that you please share this with your friends, family, and social media audiences. We have endured extreme racial profiling, discrimination, retaliation, and trauma just to remain on this land and follow through on the vision Spirit gifted them with. Please show your love and support for their work by donating today!
