- Who Am I?
My name is Fatima Matousse, I was born in southern Morocco. As a child, I was forced to drop out of school twice by a conservative father. Instead of quitting school, I decided to pursue my education. My perseverance led to earning several scholarships that helped strengthen my desire to fight for the right to education. The Fulbright Scholarship I recently received allowed me to pursue an MFA in Film at the City College of New York (2016-2018).
- My First Film
My debut film FAMILY IN EXILE which I directed won awards such as Best Short Documentary at the IMDb Independent Shorts Awards. Also, it was showcased at prominent international film festivals such as the 34th edition of Interfilm Berlin and 22nd edition of The Arab Film Festival in San Francisco, USA.
- What’s Next?
After my Fulbright experience, I came back to my hometown with the goal to make more documentary films illustrating social issues touching marginalized groups. For instance, my next film tells the stories of Hard-of-hearing communities, the challenges they are facing, and their vulnerability toward religious extremism and illegal immigration.
