Help Families Facing Hunger During COVID-19

Donation protected

When local schools closed down back in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, my family started a project called Families Feeding Families. My wife and I are both Early Childhood Educators, parents and volunteers for Save The Children Action Network.

This idea formed after realizing how many food insecure families there are without access to transportation. When the schools closed, many people were concerned about the children who depended on school meals as their only source of food.

A large portion of these families not only face food insecurity but lack the transportation needed to pick up at meal sites.

The idea is to have neighbors donate groceries and supplies (including pet food!), then re distribute them to families with children who lack access to transportation within our community.

We currently have the ability to provide food and supplies for 4 families each week.

We put 4 totes in the back of our SUV along with a cooler. Each tote gets fresh fruit and vegetables, canned goods, boxed items, and other non perishable goods like macaroni and cheese, rice and beans. Every family also receives milk, eggs, butter, cheese, ground beef, hot dogs, chicken, and lunch meat. If a family needs pet food we provide them with a bag as well.

Many neighbors have dropped off groceries and supplies, providing enough food to feed multiple families. Becca and I are using our own funds for gas and other items to make sure each family receives the same items.

As a child I faced food insecurity- often times the only meals I had during the day were those served at school. I was no stranger to hunger.

The current COVID-19 crisis has caused even more of a need for these children and our family is dedicated to helping as many families in our community as we can.

ts crucial to find 20 to 50 families with children and no access to transportation BEFORE our state starts the special legislative session.

If you've never gone to bed hungry or struggled with severe poverty all while having no vehicle.....its horrible and takes a toll on a child's mental, social and physical health.

A car makes all the difference between having access to food banks, groceries and basic needs.

All money raised will go directly towards groceries, transportation costs and household supplies for families in need.
