Computers For Youth

Oral Lee Brown  is an Oakland, Licensed Real Estate Broker and the owner of Nationwide Realty.  In 1987, she made what has become known as “The Promise” to twenty-three (23) first-graders attending an elementary school in Oakland, California. With “The Promise” she pledged to pay the college education of every student in that class if they did well and graduated from high-school.  “The Promise” changed the trajectory of Ora Lee Brown’s life. For inquiring minds:  Nineteen (19) of the students graduated high school and matriculated and graduated college. For those that would like to know the whole story; please read her book, “The Promise : How One Woman Made Good on Her Extraordinary Pact to Send a Classroom of 1st Graders to College ”.

Fast-forward to COVID-19 the virus changed the world as we know it, caused the closure of all public and private educational institutions; sent many students home with lessons and assignments in a manila envelope, Zoom Classrooms, all without a computer in tow.

The Problem: Many California students don’t have a home computer to complete their assignments; nor access to internet service, or parents that can mentor and/or guide them through this daunting process.  The closure of public libraries has further exacerbated the problem; the closures took away the only place our youth had to use computers with needed internet access to complete their assignments. In addition, these young people lost their safe, warm, after-school place; their connection to the world; and the books that often-time freed their minds.  These unfortunate conditions contribute to the academic decline of many underprivileged-youth and cause them to farther fall behind.

The solution and the motto of Beta Pi Sigma Sorority,  Inc.:  “Youth Takes Priority”.  The Ladies of Beta Chapter of Beta Pi Sigma Sorority, Inc. have already purchased $20,000 worth of computers.  Your donation is needed to purchase additional computers, Microsoft and anti-virus software, plus; computer cases.  Please Join Us – Your Donation Matters!
