Help European Books Survive the Pandemic!

European Books and Media is a small, independent bookstore that has provided new and used books, magazines, maps, and learning materials to the Bay Area and beyond since 1963, when it was founded on Larkin Street in San Francisco. Now located in Oakland, it is the primary supplier of French-language books to the West Coast.

In this digital age, European Books has found it difficult to compete with large businesses like Amazon. And now the COVID19 Shelter-in-Place order has forced the store to close its doors, so that customers are no longer able to browse the aisles of poetry, medieval history, livres de poche, and bandes dessines.

European Books needs our help! The store is owned and operated by one person: Nicolas Pellerin, a single parent of three children and former employee of the bookstore from its Larkin Street days. Because there are no other employees, the bookstore is not eligible for state emergency grants or loans. The store rents space in a small building on Shattuck Avenue in Oakland, and the landlord has not offered any relief from rent or other expenses. Shippers have raised their prices by double or triple, and institutional customers have been unable to pay their bills because their offices are closed.

Please consider donating any amount to help European Books pay for rent, utilities, and other necessary expenses. European Books is the last brick-and-mortar French-language bookstore in the country! What kind of world will it be if there is no possibility of visiting an actual bookstore to flip through the latest Tin Tin, practice your French at the cash register while picking up your summer reading, or sit down with your child to read a chapter of Le Petit Prince?

We hope you will also consider sharing this #smallbusinessrelief GoFundMe fundraiser so that we can reach a wider audience.

And, of course, please support #smallbusinesses and #indiebookstores by purchasing your summer reading from European Books and Media! While the Alameda County COVID19 Shelter-in-Place order is in effect, European Books is open for curbside pickup and mail order. Please visit the website,, for more information. Merci!
