Save Big Booty Judy and the man who crashed her
If you’ve been to a Minnesota auto show, a Midwest power tour or Street Machines summer nationals’ event, you’ve probably seen Judy. That blaze-orange, hand-fabricated, garage-built ‘63 Belair with an insane twin turbo LS motor purring under the hood and littered with signatures. Maybe you’ve even grabbed a sharpie at a show or in a parking lot and written some of your own choice commentary on it. Well … Judy and the guy who built her – Eric Hokenson - aren’t doing so great.
Earlier this summer during the Street Machines Summer Nationals at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds Eric and Judy found the concrete base of a light pole on the auto cross track. Neither fared well after the crash. Judy’s front end is totaled. She may never drive again. For Eric, a shattered heel, multiple leg fractures and lacerations … he won’t be able to stand on two legs for months. And for a guy who engineers, fabricates and builds for a living … that’s a bad thing.
He’s a manual laborer who can’t walk without crutches for the foreseeable future. Medical bills, out of work, plus an auto policy that has excluded any coverage.
He has always put others’ time ahead of his own – evident by the mile long project list he has, mostly consisting of jobs helping other people out. Whether it’s advice, mowing a neighbor’s lawn, pulling a serpentine belt out of his truck to fix a stranger’s car broken down on the road – if he had a dollar for every random job or favor he did for someone else, he’d already have met his fundraising goal.
Eric is not one to ask for handouts. Ever. That’s why we need your help. He has recently talked about selling off some of his incomplete projects, motors or possibly parting-out Judy to pay bills and earn back lost income while he’s been laid up and out of work.
If you’re part of the racing community, signed his car, followed his work and projects or one of the many people Eric has ever done a project or favor for – please consider donating. Help to give him options to heal, pay expenses and continue to create the things like Big Booty Judy that have made us all stop in our tracks and say, “wow.”
Eric, his family and loved ones sincerely thank you for your generosity.
P.S. If you don’t already, you can follow his recovery and projects on Facebook and YouTube at Building Badazz.
