<div><strong>Why we are fundraising</strong>

<div>We are raising funds to support Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery and the intensive rehabilitation that follows, which could significantly improve Eddie’s comfort, mobility, and long term independence.

</div>
<div>Eddie has cerebral palsy and is extremely active, motivated, and engaged in therapy and sport. SDR is not routinely available via the NHS in many cases, despite being recommended for some children who, like Eddie, work hard physically and show strong potential for functional gains.

<div>If surgery is confirmed, the costs of surgery, follow up care, and rehabilitation will be substantial and mostly unfunded - which is why we are asking for help.

<div><strong>Meet Eddie</strong>
</div>

<div>Eddie is 8 years old and lives in Cardiff with his family.
</div>
<div>He was born extremely prematurely at just 24 weeks, and as a result developed cerebral palsy. Eddie is currently classified as GMFCS Level 3, meaning:

<li>He can walk short distances using walking sticks and a walker
</li>
<li>For longer distances and day to day life he uses a wheelchair, provided through <a href="https://www.whizz-kidz.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whizz Kidz charity</a>

<li>Movement takes a lot of effort - but Eddie never shies away from it
</li>
</ul>

<div>Most importantly, Eddie is a busy, curious, sociable, and determined child who wants to do exactly what other children his age are doing.

<li>Horse riding every Friday through the <a href="https://rda.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Riding for the Disabled Association</a> (RDA)

<li>Swimming weekly at Maindy Centre through <a href="https://www.levelwater.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Level Water</a> , where Eddie proudly achieved a 50 metre independent swim and earned a medal in December

<div>He is a pupil at <a href="https://www.ysgolmynyddbychan.cymru/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ysgol Mynydd Bychan</a>, where he is well known and loved, and he is supported by a wider Cardiff community, including through my work at Cardiff University and other family networks.

<li>Private physiotherapy every two weeks, which we continue to fund ourselves

<div><strong>What is SDR, and why are we considering it?</strong>

<div><a href="https://www.uhbristol.nhs.uk/patients-and-visitors/your-hospitals/bristol-royal-hospital-for-children/what-we-do/paediatric-neurosurgery/selective-dorsal-rhizotomy/what-is-selective-dorsal-rhizotomy-(sdr)/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy</a> (SDR) is a specialist neurosurgical procedure aimed at reducing spasticity caused by cerebral palsy.

<div>For children like Eddie, SDR can:

<li>Improve movement efficiency and stamina

<div>SDR is not a cure, and results depend heavily on rehabilitation and continued therapy - which Eddie already commits to fully.

<div>Although hundreds of children in the UK are in a similar position, access to SDR via the NHS remains limited and inconsistent, meaning many families must fund treatment themselves despite clinical support and clear potential benefit.

<div><strong>July 2026 - Important Update - NHS Funding Confirmed</strong>

<div>Following assessment and review by the Bristol multidisciplinary team, we are delighted to share that Eddie has now been accepted for NHS-funded Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, currently anticipated for early 2027.
</div>

<div>This is wonderful news for our family and represents a major milestone in Eddie's journey.
</div>

<div>When we originally launched this fundraiser, we believed that we might need to fund the surgery itself. Thanks to the outcome of the specialist assessment process, that is no longer necessary.

<div>However, surgery is only the beginning.
</div>

<div>The greatest gains following SDR come from intensive rehabilitation, physiotherapy, strengthening, specialist support and ongoing physical activity over the months and years afterwards.

<div>Based on discussions with clinicians, therapists and families who have already been through SDR, we currently estimate rehabilitation and recovery costs over the first few years following surgery to be in the region of £20,000-£40,000+.
