Dulac, LA Hurricane Ida Relief Fund

On August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida slammed into Southeast Louisiana as a powerful Cat 4 hurricane. The storm devastated the already fragile fishing community of Dulac, LA. Not prone to waiting around for help, people got started on relief efforts right away. We started a Venmo account to initially get access to money that would allow us to purchase supplies from out of town and bring them in. That is still active and helpful and can be found here . We had an amazing outpouring of support from a wide network of people offering to cook hot meals, donate generators, and volunteer to distribute supplies. Now we are in the long-haul recovery process. We discovered that some people cannot use Venmo, and the financial need continues to grow.
Even as the power started to come back on in Dulac, we were faced with a grave homelessness situation. Many people’s homes are destroyed, and they are living in dismal situations – a boat, a car, a tent, or the one room of their tarped-up house that is less mold-ridden than the others.
We needed housing for our people. We needed to move fast, as winter was right around the corner. The money raised through this fundraiser will continue to go directly to helping people get adequate shelter. In the beginning, this was temporary type shelter. But now we are providing permanent housing for people by getting them back in their homes through a repair, or by totally rebuilding a new house. We have some volunteer labor (but we could always use more volunteer laborers!), but we continue to need funds for the building materials needed to gut and repair their homes. For some people, this will also require the purchase of a camper to temporarily live in while they rebuild. As a church, we cannot begin to address the spiritual needs of our people until their most basic physical needs are met. This includes a roof over their head and some stability in their lives.
