Help Drew Get His Seizure Service Dog

Donation protected

Hello, I'm Drew and I am asking you for help to cover the costs for a Seizure Service Dog. I was diagnosed with Epilepsy (Generalized Tonic-Clonic, which are the seizures where I lose consciousness and convulse severely) at 15 years-old. I'm now 34 years-old, I've thought a lot about this decision, and I have decided (with the blessings from my neurologist) that now is the right time for me to get a Seizure Service Dog.

There are a few different types of Seizure Service Dogs. There is a Seizure Alert Dog, which can sense oncoming seizures and warn the handler so the handler can get somewhere safe when the seizure happens. There is also a Seizure Response Dog, the more popular type, which will react once a seizure happens. Different organizations train these types of dogs differently, but some skills include pressing a button that the handler wears to call for help, getting something soft for the handler's head to protect them, and sometimes even using their body to block cushion the fall (requires a big dog and only some organizations train this skill). Both types of dogs can also help the handler remember to take their medication and carry it around in their vest when leaving the house. Also, some dogs can be both Seizure Alert Dogs and Seizure Response Dogs.

These skills would be very helpful to me. I forget to take my medication due to memory loss (from seizures and the medication itself causes forgetfulness), so having a separate mind helping to remind me would prevent seizures from happening in the first place. I'm also alone a lot, so having a service dog that would be able to call for help would be very useful in case I get injured, which I have been hospitalized in the past due to falls. Having a Seizure Service Dog will also help me work as work will be much safer if a Seizure Response Dog is there to help me.

I hope this helps you understand my situation and why I am asking you for help. Your money will go towards the $20,000  that the dog costs ($17,500 for the dog and $2,500 for the private graduation training through SIT Service Dogs), which is very reasonable for a professionally trained Service Dog. Thank you for your help!
