My name is Bella Gabriele. As part of my Grade 12 Social Justice course we were asked to come up with a course close to our heart that would benefit someone in need. We were to find a person, group of people or cause to assist. Someone who haas been neglected by society or "fallen through the cracks."
The Vancouver Downtown Eastside is a hub for Vancouver's homeless. Many groups help men on the streets but few focus on women and the special needs thay have while on the street and trying to better themselves. My parents say we are only "2 bad decisions away from ending up there." I believe that is true, and its pretty easy to make 2 mistakes. These mistakes should not destroy the rest of your life. "We are not the sum of our worst mistake"
Every person is made in the "image and likeness of God." These women only need a little help to pick up their lives. If we give them the dignity they deserve I believe it can make a huge difference in their life. Everyone deserves a second chance.
I plan to make care packages that I can hand out to women on the Eastside.
I would like to include the following in the packages:
- Toothbrush (looking for donations from dentists)
- Toothpaste (looking for donations from dentists)
- Soap or body wash (looking for hotel size toiletry donations)
- Deodorant
- Feminine hygene products
- Underware
- Blanket (looking for gently used blankets)
- 2 pairs of new socks
- A note or prayers of encouragement
- A gift card to Shoppers Drug Mart
I have chosen Shoppers as they are located all around town and sell everything someone in need could require. Food, toletries, vitamins etc.
THE MAJORITY OF THE MONEY WILL BE USED TO PURCHASE $10 GIFT CARDS.
Other money will be used to purchase the new items required.
