Hello!
My name is Donna Wall, and I am a single mother of three adults living with autism in Lewiston, Maine. My children are my world, and I am their sole caregiver.
You may have heard about my story through a PBS NewsHour segment on Maine's Medicaid expansion efforts. I don't currently have health care coverage and I worked hard to share my story so that we could expand Medicaid here in Maine for 70,000 people like me this past November. Thanks to Maine voters, we did!
I recently slipped on ice during my overnight newspaper route and broke my ankle. Getting around the house to do chores and take care of my children has been extremely difficult, and I'm not able to work right now, so bills are piling up. I am not a lazy or greedy person. I just need some help until I can get back to work.
There are many other families in Maine and across the nation that are facing similar situations. They are not eligible for Medicaid because they are considered "able-bodied adults", do not make enough money to afford private health insurance, and they are not 65 years or older which would qualify them for Medicare. It's not right that we have to fundraise for our survival. But until we are able to guarantee affordable, quality health care for all, people like me need support from people like you.
I need access to health care coverage to make sure I can take care of my children and provide for them. Until Medicaid expansion is implemented in Maine this summer, I can't sleep at night worrying about another accident or unforeseen illness. I am hoping to raise enough funds to hire an in-home personal care aide for four weeks, to pay for medical bills, and to help pay for basic necessities until I can get back on my feet.
My heart feels incredibly full with all of the compassionate messages and support I have received after the PBS NewsHour segment aired. Thank you for all of your kind wishes and for reaching out to help my family.
