Help Donald with Expenses stemming from accident

Donation protected

First, thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this passage and learn about my father. Our family is from Alexandria, Louisiana.

My dad, Donald Wilkinson, was negligently injured (as an innocent bystander) in a police pursuit in Alexandria, Louisiana in March 2019. The Alexandria Police Department was in pursuit of suspects in a residential neighborhood which ended on the service road on south McArthur. The suspects they were chasing plowed into my dad, leaving him with severe brain trauma.  Since this accident, he has suffered immensely (physically, mentally, and emotionally). His quality of life has been stolen from him.

Since his injury in this police chase, he is now incapacitated.   He is barely able to walk, is unable to talk, and he has serious neurological impairments. He is also now suffering from seizures on a regular basis. My dad had a stroke prior to this incident, now he has strokes very regularly. With the exception of a stroke, my dad did not have any of these issues prior to this incident. What has happened to my dad is heartbreaking, and very hard to see. My mother has been his primary caretaker, all while trying to still work a full-time job to cover the cost of living for them. She also must continue to work for insurance purposes. Her physical and mental health are now deteriorating from the stress of this situation and what she's now dealing with when caring for a husband who is incapacitated with no financial support from the city of Alexandria who’s Police Department caused this accident. Our family has been patiently working through this situation, while supporting my father (especially because she has been employed by the police department for 21 years).

In terms of corrective action taken by the Police Department, the  detective who called the chase was suspended for a day. In my opinion, this chase was unjustified and  should not have been called. It took place in a residential area, causing  more harm than good.

Our family is now forced to pick up the pieces without any resources or anything from the city of Alexandria. My mother also has to continue working for APD, while her husband has been a victim to this accident and their negligence, while being fearful of retaliation.

Our hope is that with your help we can help bring awareness to this accident, and financial support for my dad.  He deserves to be fairly compensated for his life, health, and quality of life being taken away from him due to the negligence of the Alexandria Police Department. We would also like to bring awareness to police chase protocols which risks the health and safety of innocent bystanders.

This GoFundMe has been set up to help raise money to lessen my mother’s load so we can afford to have a caretaker for my dad, house modifications to support his disabilities, and pain and suffering for them both.
