Help Diana finish her Masters in fine arts

The Situation:

I am Diana Al Halabi, a Lebanese artist who moved to Rotterdam in 2019 to study at the Piet Zwart Institute for a two year Master of Fine Arts program and I need your support to continue.

Coming from a working class background, I have worked hard to come here last year, and it was because of supporters like yourself that I was able to have the opportunity to be in such an educational program.

To progress into the second year I will have to pay another €11,000 for tuition fees, and will need another €11,000 to cover my living expenses for another year.

The Masters program is a full-time course, under the Dutch law I am not allowed to work more than 10 hours a week. This makes it very difficult to save any money towards my tuition fees for next year.

Given the fact that I have got a distinction grade for my first year at Piet Zwart Institute, I have been nominated for the Van Beek-Donner Scholarship - (7000 EUR), which means I would still need 4,000 EUR to be able to fund my tuition fee and 11,000 EUR for my living expenses.

The student cohort at the Piet Zwart is in solidarity with myself and other Non-Eu students, and are helping me to initiate this GoFundMe and other affirmative actions led by the students to combat structural imbalances between Eu and Non-Eu students.

Your support is so much needed at the moment, please help me graduate!

Making Art at The Piet Zwart Institute:

Since arriving at the Piet Zwart Institute, my practice has intensely developed with the support of my peers, tutors and professors. I have been working fiercely on my interdisciplinary artistic projects which vary in mediums but fundamentally use painting as a main medium while I try to expand into installation and writing to become vital in my practice. My current project looks through the female lens on the notions of upbringing, punishment and authority, in nuclear families along with small institutions. Trying to link language, naming and social class to how they are affected by news and dictatorships and simultaneously portraying forms of resistance against the oppression of women and children by such inherited patriarchal systems.

In my second year of my study I plan to work on researching the Arab newspapers from 1990 - the year of my birth. My graduate thesis will be a process of investigating the power of the news that leads families to name and raise their children after the leaders of that era.

I have been making an active contribution to the artistic community here at the Piet Zwart Institute, I am deeply committed to my studies and my development would be devastated if I were unable to successfully complete my Masters degree due to lack of funds.

Background:

When I finished a one year fellowship in Ashkal Alwan art institution in Lebanon in 2018, I decided it was necessary to do my Masters in Fine Art, and have a rigid academic education in art making, in order to allow me reflect on the sociopolitical situations with a stronger artistic voice.

Raising these funds for my first year at the Piet Zwart Institute was a daunting task. However, I was awarded the Holland scholarship (€5000) and the Philip Jabre scholarship ($3000) and provided with a laptop from the APPEAL foundation in Lebanon. I also created an online campaign (ZOOMAL) and sought donations from friends and people interested in arts and my practice. I organized a crowd-funding event in Beirut where I exhibited my paintings in a friends cultural space for one night and asked some friends to play music, from which I raised $2000. I believe these initiatives make clear how important my studies at the Piet Zwart Institute are to me; thanks to these efforts I was able to raise enough funds to support my studies for the first year.

Rewards for your donations:

The current students at The Piet Zwart Institute are working to support Diana and other Non-EU students to fund their studies, and have built an Instagram account of collected artworks by the Students & Alumni from The Piet Zwart Institute. @piet_zwart_noneu_tuition_fund

If your donation on GoFundMe matches the price-range of one of these artworks, it is yours! Simply donate the amount on Gofundme, and send us a private message on Instagram to organize the exchange.

You may choose not to have an artwork in return for your donation, in which case, we would like to send you a personalized and signed letter of appreciation from Diana and the students of Piet Zwart Institute.

Thank you for your support, with your help, I can reach my goal and finish my studies.

My eternal gratitude,

Diana
