Help Developing Radio Partners End Child Marriage

Tax deductible
Let me tell you a story about how a community radio program in Malawi changed a young girl's life - and how you can help, too.

When Florence was just a sophomore in high school in Mchinji, Malawi, she met a man who was almost twice her age.  He bought her nice things and treated her special.

She was just a girl.  He was a grown man.  And he wanted more from her.  She thought that maybe this was a way out of poverty.  And at just 16, they broke the law.  They got married.

But it was the worst decision of her young life.

“Immediately after getting into this marriage, things started to go wrong. It was torture. I was abused, both physically and emotionally.”

A few months into her marriage, Florence got a lifeline – it was a radio show by girls and boys her age, in her own language.  It was as if they were speaking to her.

“Whenever I was alone, I would listen. The Let’s Shine program really helped me. It gave me the courage to get out of the mess I was in.”

Her mom, Elizabeth, says she doesn’t want to lose Florence again. “I want her to feel welcome and feel loved at home. I also want to make sure to keep the reproductive health conversation going between us so she doesn’t have an early pregnancy. We listen to the radio program together now.”

Florence was lucky.  The Traditional Authority in her village dissolved her illegal marriage.  She can now go back to school and has a real chance to realize her dream.  She is studying to become a nurse.

Please, help us help others like Florence.

That radio program that changed Florence’s life was produced by reporters trained by Developing Radio Partners.  During the pandemic, child marriage and teen pregnancy have reached an all-time high in Malawi.  Every week, partner stations and reporters are producing shows that reach millions of people – girls like Florence – in villages across Malawi.

Please help Developing Radio Partners so we can continue to train reporters to produce such life-changing radio programs.  Any amount you can contribute will make a real difference.

$250 will help DRP produce two programs in Malawi on youth health issues – including teen pregnancy.

$125 will help DRP produce one radio program on youth health issues – including ending child marriage

$75 will help train one journalist to produce shows on how to stay safe from COVID-19

$25 will help us to continue to reach more girls like Florence
