More than 30 years ago, Deon came springing into our lives. His irresistible high spirits won the hearts of many, including my parents as well as Kit’s, my best friend’s, parents. Our moms made sure he had everything he needed from his first-ever dance belt to transportation to and from ballet classes, rehearsals, and summer ballet school auditions. He flew the coup, like the rest of their children, and went after his dream to become a professional ballet dancer. Winning a full scholarship to the Houston Ballet Academy, Deon danced with the Houston ballet and around the globe with Ballets GRANDIVA then passing on his experience in ballet to his beloved students of Rochester, MN.
When Deon’s health took a drastic turn for the worse, we made sure he had what he needed to survive. We stood by him through horrific near-death experiences. More often than not, the doctors were surprised he made it through.
The building Deon lives in has disregarded his basic human rights by forcing him to handle raw sewage for 6 months running into his bathroom from the unit above Deon has a compromised immune system and has been living on dialysis for 9 years. The building administration has shown indifference in safely remedying this potentially life-threatening situation. Repeated requests to building administration go unanswered.
It is wrong that Deon’s basic tenant rights and repair requests have been ignored. So we are going to do what is right by seeking legal counsel and continuing to keep Deon housed in a safe and healthy environment until this issue is resolved.
