Help Day Move Back to New Mexico
Donation protected
My name is Melody and I started this GoFundMe to raise money so my disabled daughter, Day, can move back to New Mexico. In 2019, we moved Day and our grandchild Alfie up here to Grants Pass to be near us. The original goal was to help them move to the Eugene area. However, we were not able to make that happen and they have been stuck here in Grants Pass since.
Day’s physical health is made worse by the climate here in Grants Pass. Day has gotten progressively sicker and her body is giving out as healthcare providers are unable to help. The climate in New Mexico is much better for Day’s physical health and the healthcare insurance and options are also better. In New Mexico, she was under the care of a Neurologist but here, her insurance says she is too young to need a Neurologist.
Grants Pass is also a toxic place for the mental health of both Day and Alfie. Day’s best friend Rachel lost her battle with mental health here, killing herself and her son (Alfie’s best friend). Everywhere they look, they see constant reminders. Because of how the health insurance works, they are also stuck going to the very same mental health providers that were treating Rachel. Alfie is autistic and the middle school here has not been supportive of their needs, adding to their distress.
Day’s health deteriorated to the point that Alfie went to WA to live with their dad. Unfortunately, Alfie cannot stay with their dad once the school year ends as he has some upcoming deployments with the military. The studio Day is living in now does not have heat or a functioning cook stove so it is not suitable for Alfie to come back here. As Day must move anyway, it makes the most sense for them to move back to where they both received the physical and mental healthcare they needed.
Despite her own struggles, Day has been an advocate for the less fortunate and unhoused in our community and I’m hoping we can now come together in her hour of need. Day is on SSI – which is only about $900 each month (she receives the maximum allowed) – so it is nearly impossible for her to set enough money aside for the move. We need to raise enough money by May to cover the rent deposit and moving expenses to move them and their therapy kitty, Callie, back to New Mexico. (They leave Oregon on May 15) Even Callie was happier and healthier in New Mexico!
