For those of us who know Dawn LeJeune Taylor and her quiet, reserved personality, we know she is certainly more likely to give than to ever ask for help. However, since being diagnosed with cancer in 2016 many of us have seen all she has had to endure. At this time her family and friends are asking for your support for Dawn and her family.
Dawn is married to Pat Taylor and is the mother of 2, Reed and Marshall. She is the step-mother of 4, Michael, Sam, John, and Abby. She was born and raised in Welsh, LA and moved to Lake Charles after graduating high school and has lived there since. Dawn is a devout Christian who goes about her efforts humbly and not for personal gratification. Her life revolves around their kids. There are weekends Dawn is scrambling between baseball and football games, band gigs, or cheerleading exhibitions. Often despite the side effects her treatments that week have taken on her physically.
We all know her as the quiet, soft-spoken lady at each event who finds the positive in every situation and cheers for every kid participating, regardless if they are hers own or not. She’s always willing to donate her time and talents to help each team or club and does not ask of anything in return.
Dawn began working at the Calcasieu Marine Tower in 1995 and has thoroughly enjoyed the last 23 years in property management. She is currently Assistant Property Manager at what is now the Capital One Tower. Her employers & co-workers have patiently and generously worked with Dawn to allow her to continue to do her job from wherever she needed during her treatment. She was very happy to get back into her office full-time and work with her tenants again in October 2017. Everyone continues to be supportive through her newest round of treatment.
In early 2016 during a routine exam, Dawn’s doctor noticed a lump in her leg which concerned her. On March 4, 2016 after extensive tests, our fears were confirmed and she did in fact have cancer. Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma is the clinical term; a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissue.
Since that terrible day, she has been back and forth to Houston to M.D. Anderson for surgery, testing, and treatments many, many times. The care that these physicians continue to give has been second-to-none, but it has taken a large financial toll on Dawn and her family.
Since March of 2016, Dawn’s journey to rid herself of this awful disease has been frightful. She did radiation treatments from March to May 2016 to reduce the size of the tumor prior to her surgery to remove it in July 2016. We hoped this would be the end of it, but after a follow up to the surgery, doctors confirmed our worst fears and that the cancer had spread to her lungs.
Dawn then began the horror that is chemotherapy to decrease the size of the spots on her lungs which has been incredibly taxing on her physically. She had to endure this from August 2016 to April 2017. The doctors at M.D. Anderson then performed surgery to remove three spots in left lung in June 2017 which also was physically taxing as they had to break a rib bone to access the spots on the lungs.
Much to our relief, she was considered to be in remission for six months, and we hoped and prayed the worst was over. In January 2018, the cancer returned when three new spots were found on the left lung, one on a lymph node and two on the chest wall. Surgical removal would require removing half of her lung.
Her M.D. Anderson medical team encouraged her to enter into trial immunotherapy. In February, she started a clinical trial using what the doctor calls a high-tech version of Keytruda. With all of that said, her journey to beat cancer to this point has been a nightmare and she still has a more to endure.
Despite all Dawn has been through, she has remained positive and has done everything to not allow her suffering to effect others and their lives. She does things like insist her husband Pat stay behind while she goes to a treatment so that someone can attend an event of one of the kids. She has the unbelievable support of her family and friends, and her employers have been overwhelming supportive as well, but her medical bills have been extremely burdensome on her family.
To date, Dawn and Pat have had to cover over $12,000 in medical bills out of pocket with more to come with much more to come The immunotherapy she is currently undergoing requires her to make overnight trips to Houston every 2 weeks, and since this is a trial regimen, it is not covered by insurance.
