Loretta Scanlan and David Steineck need your support. David has spent many weeks hospitalized in the last year with severe congestive heart failure as a result of multiple heart attacks over a period of time.
As a result, Loretta has been unable to work much as a flight attendant for Delta. Making the mortgage payment and ends meet is extremely difficult, frightening and stressful. Loretta has been the sole bread winner for years as David’s health declined. Medical costs are mounting. Groceries still need to be purchased and the lights need to stay on.
Just before last Christmas, surgeons at the University of Minnesota surgically implanted in David’s chest a left ventricular assist device or LVAD, a new mechanical pump to help his heart do its job. He left the hospital January 1, with renewed hope for a new year of health. But a clot developed in the pump, he returned to the hospital January 28, and suffered a significant stroke February 5, which required another trip to the operating room. David continues to have a great deal of weakness on his left side from the stroke.
This is not the result the rest of us had our hearts set on. David’s passion for his family, politics, creating art and music are strong, and it is difficult for those who love him to see him in a weakened condition.
Loretta is so strong-she tends to everyone’s needs before her own and pours her heart into caring for David and her family. She had only recently returned to some short flights at Delta when David was readmitted to the hospital at the end of January. Loretta most likely will not return to a regular schedule and greater income until David’s condition stabilizes, he goes through physical and occupational therapy and is discharged. He will be connected to the LVAD external controller and power source at all times.
