As many of you know, I have been battling metastatic breast cancer (MBC) for the past 11 years. Five years ago, the cancer returned, first to my spine and then to my liver. Since then, I have been on continuous chemotherapy without a break and have also undergone numerous rounds of radiation to my spine. Recently, we were told that my treatment options are becoming very limited. In a few weeks, we will know whether the treatment I am currently receiving is working. In June, we traveled to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, hoping to find additional options. Unfortunately, the medical oncologist confirmed what we had already begun to fear—that my standard treatment options are running out. I was referred to their clinical trials team, but because of the many chemotherapy treatments I have already received, they explained that finding a trial I qualify for would be extremely difficult. We returned home feeling discouraged and heartbroken. Then, last week, we received an unexpected phone call about a possible clinical trial at MD Anderson. Before I can be considered, I must go through several screenings and tests, including a liver biopsy to determine whether my cancer has a specific cell type required for the study. If those cells are not present, I will not qualify for the trial. Insurance does not cover the travel, lodging, or many of the expenses associated with pursuing treatment away from home, and we do not know how long we would need to stay in Texas if I am accepted. At the same time, we are exploring integrative cancer treatment programs. Only a handful of facilities in the United States offer these advanced approaches. They combine cutting-edge genomic testing, personalized treatment plans based on my DNA and the cancer's pathology, specialized medications, and targeted procedures designed to deliver treatment directly where it is needed. Because these therapies fall outside the standard of care, they are not covered by insurance, leaving us responsible for the full cost. We continue to pray that God will lead us exactly where we need to be. He has walked with us through every step of this journey—the good, the bad, the difficult, and the heartbreaking—and we trust that He is not finished writing my story.
