Help Dan Marshall with his Bone Marrow Transplant

Spende geschützt
I am starting this GoFundMe for my brother Dan Marshall who needs a Bone Marrow transplant as treatment for his cancer.  For those of you who don’t know my brother well, he is one of the last people who would ever ask for anything but would be the first to ask what he could do to help you. So, I am asking on his behalf.

For those of you who know Dan, it’s unlikely that you know how long he has been battling this illness or how serious it has progressed, not because he is a private person and unwilling to share, but because he is simply the type that never complains, always has a positive attitude, and simply pushes through even as the disease has progressed within and left doctor after doctor trying to correctly diagnose and ultimately treat him.

Over the years Dan has been to countless specialists and has received a gauntlet of diagnosis ranging from Eosinophilic fasciitis to a rare diagnosis called CIDP.  With each diagnosis has come new treatments ranging from medications to even monthly transfusions with little to no success.

Last year, as symptoms progressed, Dan was diagnosed with Large Granular Lymphocytic leukemia, also known as LGL Leukemia and he immediately began a chemo medication.  After months with no results, further testing was done and Dan tested positive for even more blood related diseases including Aplastic Anemia, Trisomy 6, PNH and MDS, which ultimately led to him being referred from Pittsburgh, PA to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio to see their team of blood related oncology specialists.

I’ll never forget listening to the doctor say that their entire team had met and reviewed his case and that "no one has ever seen a patient that has tested positive for all the blood related diseases that he has, or seen a case like his"  Not exactly the words you want to hear from a team of world renown doctors at the age of 42.  Since then, Dan has been put through multiple treatments and all the negative side effects that come along with them, with no success, and as his disease has continued to progress, his body has increasingly required more blood and platelet transfusions, almost on a weekly basis, bringing him to where he is today.

Dan's primary oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic has gone as far as to reaching out to doctors all over the world, seeking additional guidance, sharing his case, and the only conclusive recommendation has been made to proceed with a Bone Marrow transplant out of fear that his disease could quickly progress to AML or a substantially more aggressive form of Leukemia that would leave him untreatable.

Due to the rarity of his diagnosis that referred him to the Cleveland Clinic and his insurance not allowing him to be treated at UPMC, doctors have recommended he have the procedure done at the Cleveland Clinic which means he is about to be admitted to the Cleveland Clinic hospital and best case scenario, spend a minimum of 100 days in Cleveland

To complicate matters further, the lodging facility normally provided for free by the Cleveland Clinic is temporarily closed due to COVID, and Dan’s wife Jessica, is only allowed to be at the hospital during visitation hours, meaning she will need housing while Dan is in the hospital since they will be so far from home.  In addition to housing for Jessica while Dan is in the hospital, they are requiring Dan to remain isolated and find temporary housing near the hospital for several months after he is discharged to continue potential treatments, monitoring, and be close if something goes wrong.

Meanwhile, for those who don’t know, Dan and Jessica also have two boys at home, Luke, 14, and Zach, a 17-year-old, that also happens to be battling Type 1 diabetes, which makes it even more challenging for both Dan and Jessica to be living several hours away from home for months.  Unfortunately, Dan doesn’t have a choice and even his doctors in PA have recommended he have the procedure done at the Cleveland Clinic in order for him to receive the best care that he can.  So, they are left to figure out all of the logistics in a very short period of time along with how to cover the related expenses.

Dan is about to embark in a battle for his life and has been forced to do so hours from his home, and this is why he desperately needs our help.

I am starting this GoFundMe because even under the best-case scenario they will need funds for:

4+ months of temporary housing with furniture
Potential Lost Wages from work for both Dan and Jess
Medical Co-Pays and Deductibles
Gas money for Jess to travel back and forth
Parking expenses

Along with countless other expenses that are expected to quickly add up.  If you are able to contribute anything through this GoFundMe to help, please do so, no amount is too small, and even if you are unable to donate something financially, I believe what Dan and his family need the most are our prayers

Some specific things I believe we can be praying for are:

- Prayers on July 28th and the days following as Dan endures extreme chemo
- Prayers starting on August 4th as they hopefully begin the transplant
- Prayers for the doctors and nurses that will be managing his care
- Prayers for Dan specifically that he can lean more on his faith in God, keep a positive attitude, and ultimately find the strength to persevere and beat this.
- Prayers for Jess, for her safety as she is forced to leave the hospital each night and for peace and comfort when she can’t be by Dan’s side at night.
- Prayers for Zach and Luke as they spend months without being able to see their parents

There are so many unknowns ahead for Dan, but we are choosing to believe that God’s Got This.  After I only tested to be a 50% match as a potential donor, God showed up and an anonymous donor was found that was a perfect 100% match.

I believe God’s going to show up in a big way in the months ahead and we can all be a part of that.  Through our financial support that can help alleviate some of the financial burden ahead, along with our encouragement and prayers, I am asking you to join me in overwhelming Dan and his family with support and encouragement knowing that they are not in this fight alone.   I have set a goal of $50,000 but I am sure their long term needs will far exceed this amount.

I plan to provide updates on here and will also be providing a link to sign up for email updates as well to keep everyone informed.

Thank you for joining me and ultimately helping Dan and his family in whatever way you can.
