Cynthia Villeda Brain Surgery Treatment Fund

Recently Cynthia was diagnosed with Bilateral Trigeminal Neuralgia, TN is an incurable brain disorder caused by compression of brain nerves causing debilitating facial and head pain. In some patients they deal with flares or periods of time which they are in excruciating pain, usually one sided, in Cynthia’s case it’s a daily issue on both sides, the pain she feels is electrocuting, sharp and stabbing combined with with fatigue and headaches.

Her diagnosis comes after head & facial trauma and a concussion causing years of misdiagnosis filled with frustration, anxiety and a variety of medication such as anti seizure and pain killers. Her family researched every treatment available, they have tried everything. She is from Edmonton and has spoken to many neurosurgeons across Canada, all unable to offer the surgery she requires. She was able to get a consultation with Dr. Micheal Lim out of Stanford hospital ( brain surgeon - specialization TN, decompression surgery) he suggested a specific MRI that depicts a more accurate picture of the brain and he was able to identify which nerves are not getting enough blood supply and view the nerves being compressed on both sides of the brain. Dr.Lim will go into the brain adding Teflon giving the space necessary to the Trigeminal nerve that will then let the myelin sheath to eventually regenerate. Dr Lim has a 90% success rate and a 1% risk factor for complications.

Cynthias’s options are the continuation of anti seizure medication for life or this surgery. She has been on seizure medications, anti inflammatories and pain killers for almost 3 years. These medications have MANY side effects and long term is not plausible ( it gives her heart palpitations, can lead to cancer if used long term, liver issues, causes depression, anxiety, memory loss, etc to name a few).

Dr.Lim works out of California and has graciously granted an exception on cost however it will still cost $60,000 CAD, per side. Due to the possibility of stroke he will have to perform one surgery, wait 6-8weeks and perform the other side. Our hope is to fix the left side first due to the severity of pain and loss of speech. Cynthia has missed out on so much. She cannot go outside, play with her kids outside, perform tasks that we take for granted, even feeling the wind on her face causes pain.
Any contact with her face causes extreme pain including brushing her teeth eating, wind, cold, smiling, laughing to name some.
She is hoping to travel before winter and remaining funds will be used for travelling, food, gas, stay, pre & post op, medication & for extra nights needed for hospital stay if needed.

This young family has had their hardships and would normally not ask for help in this case, Cynthia understands that it would put a tremendous financial strain as her husband, who is a neck cancer survivor and has been in remission for 6 years, adding additional stress.

The future at times seems bleak for them and we do not know the foreseeable future, their hope is to have at least one healthy parent to be there for their 2 small children.
Her dream is to be able to go for a walk with her sons without pain & not to stop missing out on their lives.

If you feel inspired to donate, we greatly appreciate, if you are able to share the post we would be so grateful. Thank you all in advance.
