On February 16th, my mom held our 7 lb., 15-year-old dog Mitchie, as he passed away. In no hurry to get another dog, 5 days later, she was approached by a friend, who showed her a photo of a 12-year-old dog, in great health, who "looked a lot like Mitchie". The friend explained that the original owners had moved into assisted living, and that though she had tried for 3 months to acclimate “Lindsey” into her home, it was without success, as one of her dogs and Lindsey tussled too much.

My mom was told that the dog was to be euthanized the next morning at 11:30am, because they had tried without luck, to find her another home. My mom said that’s not OK to put down a perfectly healthy dog just because… and that she would take 65lb. Lindsey. This was a big adjustment, as mom had never owned any dog over 20lbs.

The agreement to take in Lindsey came with the promise that her former owners would pay for her upkeep, for the rest of her life. However, when my mom noticed a growth on Lindsey’s gum and shared it with the friend, they said they had not noticed it. A vet visit resulted in the suggestion to remove the growth. Mom shared this with the friend, who shared it with the previous owners. Their reply regarding the necessary surgery, was “she’s an old dog and whether the surgery was done or not, it wouldn’t change the course of her life expectancy”! In other words, they would NOT pay for said surgery!

With this unacceptable answer, mom had the surgery done anyway, yesterday. During the surgery the vet found that the tumor had invaded the jaw bone, behind the gum as well. The mass, as well as bone involved with the mass, and 3 front teeth were removed. Grafting of skin from Lindsey’s lip, to cover the exposed area was necessary.

Mom is on a limited retirement income, but paid the bill of $1,593.
