Help Courtney Defeat Cancer

Hello, everybody! 8 months ago, my best friend Courtney Allen, began to feel subtle pain in her abdomen. Initially, she thought it was indigestion. Sadly, that was not the case. Her stomach was swelling, and each day it worsened. She was rushed to the emergency room with SEVERE pain, loss of vision and the inability to speak. The doctor concluded that the pain was caused by tumor torsion. Courtney is only 19 years old.
Her first surgery consisted of the removal of a germ-cell tumor. Courtney’s tumor was twice the size of a softball – the largest tumor the doctors had ever seen. The tumor resided on one of her ovaries. In removing this tumor, they also removed her ovary. Germ cells are capable of taking the form of any cell, and hers was made out of thyroid germ cells, resulting in thyroid cancer.
The biopsy showed that Courtney has a very rare type of teratoma called a Malignant Struma Ovarii. This type of teratoma has been reported in only 200 patients, and Courtney is recorded as the youngest person, by far, to experience this…
Currently, Courtney’s thyroglobulin levels are in the 80s, which indicates that the cancer is spreading… Now, the doctors have to remove her thyroid and perform a “cancer surgery” on her abdomen. This is an exploratory surgery and they will be removing lymph nodes and tissues for biopsy. Then, the surgeons will use radioactive iodine to locate where the cancer has spread.
In the very near future, Courtney will face several rounds of radiation and chemo treatments. This radiation has an extremely high chance of causing total infertility. Courtney has since gone through the arduous and costly process of having her eggs frozen. Doctors feared taking on her case because they didn’t want to unintentionally spread the cancer by freezing her eggs.
Courtney is the least deserving person in the world to have to battle through these experiences. In addition to working and winning the hearts of children in her community through nannying and coaching gymnastics, she is a full-time student at the University of West Georgia, studying Marketing. Courtney is a kind soul with a positive spirit and an intense appreciation for life – and she needs your help.
Each treatment and procedure will cost several thousand dollars. Week after week. Month after month. Without help, this experience will financially bury Courtney and her family.
