Cónan is Sophie's father. He is 29 and has just been diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of Esophageal cancer which is rare for someone his age.

Without immediate treatment, he has a very limited life expectancy. Cónan has been left undiagnosed for TWO YEARS despite going to numerous doctors and hospitals in Ireland.

Not only were the healthcare professionals negligent in giving him the care he badly needed but they also misdiagnosed him with another serious illness only to later inform him that it was a mistake and he didn’t actually have that illness.

Even after such a big blunder, they still didn’t test Cónan for the cause of his illness despite his constant requests to test him for cancer. They told him they couldn’t test him because “It is outside his insurance coverage since he is under 50 years and they only test people over 50.”

Cónan had been successfully employed in a job he loved for ten years and had moved up in the company several times. However when he kept getting sicker, had no diagnosis to show and couldn’t commit to attending work regularly because of his health - he was let go.

As a responsible father looking to provide for his daughter, he accepted a job in Germany almost immediately. His health, however, continued to decline and he ended up in the Accident and Emergency department of the local hospital.

In just FOUR DAYS they had carried out the tests Cónan had been begging his insurance company in Ireland for. The diagnosis? Esophageal cancer. Something that healthcare professionals in Ireland hadn’t been able to diagnose in TWO years.  

Unfortunately, due to a clerical error that his insurance company made, Cónan’s health insurance got cancelled. He is trying to get it reinstated, but in the meantime, his medical expenses are piling up.

If he’s to get further treatment - if he is to survive this cancer - Cónan needs to pay. As things stand now, he does not have the funds to pay the current medical expenses accrued, never mind any future costs that will arise.

Esophageal cancer is aggressive. If not treated in time, it is also fatal.

Because Cónan is short of funds, he can’t get treated until his insurance gets sorted. To get his medical insurance sorted, Cónan needs time. And time is a luxury he does not have. For him to have a chance at survival, his treatment needs to begin immediately.

Cónan needs to raise €115,000 just to get the treatment started.

Cónan is living alone in Germany, away from his girlfriend and daughter. Without treatment, his little girl will grow up without a father.

EVERY DAY this three-year-old daughter asks: “Where is my Daddy? I miss him!” She is too young to understand a word like cancer and concept like death.

Cónan needs multiple surgeries and ongoing treatments. Because of the misdiagnoses and cavalier attitude of his health insurance company, critical time has been wasted.

He needs treatment NOW.

Cónan is going to need looking after while he recovers when he does receive his surgery. This means he won't be able to work and will also lose his only source of income. While most of the money will be used for his treatment, some of it will be utilised for his living expenses.
