<div>My husband, Jens, and I have been married for 7 years and together for 12. We met when he was on exchange from Sweden to UNCG. Jens moved to the US in 2019, and 1.5 years later, a freak accident revealed he had <strong>grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma brain cancer</strong>. He did a trial and standard of care, which included a craniotomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. Jens was a fighter and endured all that the treatments did to his mind and body with hopes of it not returning for 5-7 years.

<div>It returned 10 months later. At 33 with a recurrence, Jens was physically and cognitively destroyed as the tumor grew through a trial and the standard of care treatment. He had clean MRIs for about 6 months, but he still continued to decline. He was hospitalized in March for 2.5 weeks, but doctors found no underlying illnesses. He went to in-patient rehab for 3 weeks for physical, occupational, and speech therapy but left not any better than when he was admitted. In the meantime, he missed two infusions, and the tumor rebounded with a vengeance yet again.

<div>Jens is currently at home on hospice care. We have fought so incredibly hard to give him the highest quality of life along this journey. He is absolutely the best person I know and deserves so much more. Jens is the kindest, most curious, and down-to-earth person I have ever met. <strong>We are drowning in medical debt and the hidden cost of a cancer diagnosis.</strong> He hasn't been able to work since December because his body and mind have been deteriorating slowly over this entire journey. I am a high school teacher, so our income has been incredibly limited. Because Jens is a green card holder and has lived here for only 5 years, he is not eligible for disability. I have taken on several side hustles to make ends meet.
