Help Coach Brian Beat Cancer - #BEstrong

Donation protected
Brian Edelman, our beloved Palos Verdes High School basketball coach and one of the youngest to ever be named Daily Breeze Coach of the Year in 2019, is now one of the youngest to ever have to face down Stage 4 colon cancer. At just 33 years old, he is extremely young for this type of cancer – doctors typically don’t even start looking for such a thing until age 50 or beyond.

In addition to the radiation and oral chemo program he’s already begun, Brian will now need numerous hospitalizations for intensive, systemic IV chemotherapy, advanced genetic testing, clinical trials and more surgery to rid his body of the tumors and restore him to full health.

As a “walk on coach” at PV High, Brian is paid a very small stipend and is not eligible to be covered by the school district’s health insurance plan or receive benefits such as paid time off and employee financial health assistance. He has always paid for private health insurance and all related expenses entirely out of pocket with no employer support. His ability to work and earn money necessary to pay for his ongoing treatment is at great risk.

Brian has coached and mentored close to 1000 young athletes in the South Bay over the past 15 years through his work at PVHS, as a co-founder of the Cagers youth basketball program, a coach at Redondo Union High School as well as volunteering at numerous camps and clinics.

To know Brian is to understand that he is a sincere, caring and giving young man, dedicated to his family and friends and passionate about developing and preparing young athletes to deal with struggles and adversity. Now he faces his own adversity.

This was the last thing anyone – including Brian – ever expected to happen to him.

- Brian has already had to endure both the trauma and cost of surgery on his lungs and more are expected in the coming months in both his colon and lungs
- He will have to bear the financial burden of treatment, surgery, doctor’s appointments, tests, scans, imaging, second opinions and travel in addition to the high cost of chemotherapy prescriptions, radiation pills, pain medication and antibiotics
- As a coach paid hourly, his ability to work and maintain subsistence compensation is in jeopardy
- Brian has given so much to our community.  Please show your love, support, and gratitude in whatever way you can
- Please share this with your friends and network – every donation is welcomed and deeply appreciated
