Help Chris & Sara Give Birth!

Hey y’all, Sara Moe here, and I’m eight months pregnant with my first baby! My partner Christopher and I are happily awaiting our bundle of joy. In February 2017, I had a very vivid dream that I was giving birth to our baby in a birthing pool at home. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I tend to follow my dreams. In July 2017, I found out I was pregnant (after taking three pregnancy tests, heheheheh). In August, we told our parents & siblings the news. They were overjoyed, as were we – the first grandchild for both sides. I feel so blessed to have found someone who not only wants to raise a child with me, but agrees with how to do it. Christopher and I have decided to bring our baby into this world in the comfort & familiarity of our own home. We want to bring to life the dream I had in February of last year – in fact, our baby is due in February 2018! We’ve got a great midwife (she and Christopher are old friends), and we both have great health insurance, but it doesn’t cover home birth. Which is why we’re reaching out to our friends, family, and all their networks.

Birth is often seen as a medical condition instead of a natural physiological process. I want to avoid any unnecessary medical interventions that have become routine during labor & delivery in most hospitals. Women’s bodies are made to bear children; very rarely is medical intervention actually necessary.

In low-risk pregnancies, home birth is just as safe, (often safer) than hospital birth. The rate of cesarean section in home birth from 2[phone redacted] was 5.2%, compared to the U.S. national average of 31%. In the same period, ninety-seven percent of babies were carried to full-term, they weighed an average of eight pounds at birth, and nearly 98% were being breastfed at the six-week postpartum visit with their midwife. Only 1% of babies required transfer to the hospital after birth, most for non-urgent conditions. Although medical interventions are sometimes necessary, they are often used in hospitals to speed up labor for the convenience of doctors.

In addition to being as safe if not safer, having a birth at home allows me to make important decisions about how I want to give birth. This allows for a smoother and less complicated birth process. Hospitals can be stressful environments – adding to the natural stress of birth – this can compound feelings of unease during birth and exacerbate complications. What I really want is to be fully present for these moments. Birth is a mystery and a miracle, and I want the process to honor that.

Here’s what the money will cover:

~Prenatal visits approximately every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until birth

~Midwife on call for labor & birth for 5 weeks (from 37-42 weeks gestation)

~A minimum of 5 postpartum home visits

~Well-baby assessment (not to replace a pediatric care provider)

~Birth tub rental

The total cost is $6500: $1000 for a deposit to secure my spot, and $5500 for all the visits, midwife on call, actual labor & birthing, postpartum visits, and birth tub rental.

Christopher and I are contributing, but because home birth is not covered by our insurance we need help.

This means so much to me – to literally make my dreams real. So much about the life of this baby is a magical thread connecting it to its ancestors. It will know this connection, in part by being born in the way that many of its ancestors were.

We’re so grateful for all the love & support we’ve received from our family & friends. This baby has already brought so many people together and we’re hoping to bring it into this world in the company of that community and the familiarity of its new home.

Please help us make this dream a reality! <3
