Just 8 weeks ago, Chloe was diagnosed with very severe aplastic anemia (VSAA) – a rare, life-threatening bone marrow failure disorder. Unlike leukemia or other cancers, her bone marrow has simply stopped producing the blood cells her body needs to survive. She relies on frequent blood and platelet transfusions to survive, and because her immune system is critically weakened, even a simple infection can become life-threatening. Hospital stays, transfusions, medications, procedures, and constant uncertainty have become part of everyday life. In the next few weeks, Chloe will begin her 6–8 week hospital stay at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis to start the process of a bone marrow transplant – the treatment that offers her the greatest hope for a cure. It is an incredibly difficult road. After the transplant, she will spend many months recovering, isolated from everyday life as her new immune system develops, including having to live locally in Indy for 3 months. Her doctors expect that she will be unable to work for approximately a year while she heals and rebuilds her strength. Before that transplant can happen, we are racing against time for another reason.

 The chemotherapy and treatments necessary to save Chloe’s life carry a very real risk of permanently damaging her ovaries, leaving her unable to have biological children. Because of that, she is undergoing fertility preservation through egg retrieval before treatment begins. Because of Chloe’s diagnosis, she needs to travel to Chicago (every 2–3 days) for this process to have access to specialists in the Oncology-Fertility field. While this procedure gives her the possibility of one day becoming the mother she’s always dreamed of being, none of the cost is covered by insurance. Fertility preservation requires high risk precautions to do this safely. No young woman should have to choose between fighting for her life and protecting her chance to have a family someday. As you can imagine, the financial burden has become overwhelming. Between ongoing hospitalizations, blood and platelet transfusions, travel to specialists, medications, fertility treatments, lodging, meals away from home, and the loss of income during Chloe’s lengthy recovery, the expenses continue to grow.
