My name is Cheryl Hsu, and I'm thrilled to be playing with the US National Team at the World Beach Ultimate Championships in Portimão, Portugal this year!
When I started playing Ultimate in small town Davis, California, I never thought that I would travel internationally to compete at the world level. But through hard work and support from my friends and family, I've been able to achieve dreams I've never thought possible.
I fell in love with Ultimate my first year at UC Davis and ended up playing all four years, making lifelong friends along the way. After graduating, Ultimate continued to be a big part of my life and source of community as I played club Ultimate in the Bay Area and coached at UC Davis. However, things took a turn for the worse when I tore my ACL. Not only did I lose my 2019 club season to injury, but the 2020 club and coaching seasons as well to the COVID pandemic.
Coming out of the pandemic, I moved to Seattle with my partner Tommy, nervous to be joining a new community. Yet, Seattle welcomed me with open arms. Seattle BFG took me on in 2021 and I ended winning the USAU Club National Championships and was named Breakout Player of the Year. I was also lucky to sign with the professional team Seattle Tempest and we won the league championships in 2022 and 2023. Though I've come a long way, I still have love for each community that helped bring me up. I returned to California in the winter of 2021 to finish coaching Davis, leading them to their first Nationals appearance in over 15 years, and have followed along with pride since then.
Now I've added a new chapter to my Ultimate career with beach, and though I'm just getting started I'm already having a blast: this year a group of friends from Seattle and I won Leiout, one of the largest and most competitive beach tournaments in the world. With the US National Team, I competed at Sandblast 2025 and won as well. Now I'm looking forward to competing for a gold at the World Championships with my new friends on Team USA!
My journey would not have been possible without support from my community each step of the way. I'm now asking for support again to help make this new incredible opportunity happen.
Your support will directly help cover:
• Flights to/from 3 training camp weekends, along with to/from Portugal for the World Championships
• Food and lodging during training camps and the tournament
• Tournament player fees and USAU team dues
Thank you for learning about my journey! Any help--whether donating or sharing--is immensely appreciated. I will do my best to make you all proud!
<3 Cheryl
