For years, Charly has battled multiple medical issues that have left her dangerously underweight—a struggle that has only grown harder as her body refuses to recover despite every effort. The one thing that finally brought her some relief was medicinal cannabis, which she fought for and secured through Germany’s statutory health insurance (Krankenkasse) earlier this year. But now, the government has taken that away.

For people like Charly—who spent years navigating bureaucracy, pain, and exhaustion just to access this treatment—this decision feels like a cruel setback. Without this medicine, her symptoms worsen, and her ability to cope plummets.

<div>Due to her multiple medical issues Charly is currently unable to work and therefore has barely enough to cover basic expenses. Every month, she faces an impossible choice: buy food or afford the medicine that might help her survive. The kindness of friends and family has been a lifeline, but it’s not enough to bridge the gap. Savings that once provided a buffer have long since vanished after years of medical bills and unforeseen costs.

<div>And then there’s Maya. Her 17-year-old companion has also faced health challenges this year, adding to the financial and emotional strain. Vet bills, medications, and special food for Maya have become an additional burden—one that Charly bears with love but without the means to fully address. Charly’s greatest comfort is also her greatest responsibility, and she’s doing everything she can to keep them both safe.

Seit Jahren kämpft Charly mit mehreren gesundheitlichen Problemen, die dazu geführt haben, dass sie gefährlich untergewichtig ist – ein Kampf, der immer härter wird, da ihr Körper sich trotz aller Bemühungen nicht erholt. Das Einzige, das ihr endlich etwas Linderung verschaffte, war medizinischer Cannabis, den sie nach Jahren des Kampfes und Bürokratie über die deutsche Krankenkasse (Krankenkasse) Anfang dieses Jahres erhalten hat. Doch jetzt hat die Regierung diese Möglichkeit genommen.

<div>Diese Woche wurden Cannabisblüten von der Liste der erstattungsfähigen Leistungen in der gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung gestrichen. Für Menschen wie Charly – die jahrelang Bürokratie, Schmerzen und Erschöpfung überwunden haben, um Zugang zu dieser Behandlung zu erhalten – fühlt sich diese Entscheidung wie ein grausamer Rückschlag an. Ohne dieses Medikament verschlimmern sich ihre Symptome, und ihre Fähigkeit, damit umzugehen, schwindet.

<div>Aufgrund ihrer gesundheitlichen Probleme kann Charly derzeit nicht arbeiten und hat daher nicht genug Geld, um die Grundkosten zu decken. Jeden Monat steht sie vor der unmöglichen Wahl: Essen kaufen oder das Medikament bezahlen, das ihr vielleicht helfen könnte zu überleben. Die Unterstützung von Freunden und Familie war bisher ein Rettungsanker, aber sie reicht nicht aus, um die Lücke zu schließen. Die Ersparnisse, die einst eine Pufferfunktion hatten, sind nach Jahren voller Arztkosten und unerwarteter Ausgaben längst aufgebraucht.

<div>Und dann ist da noch Maya. Ihre 17-jährige Begleiterin hatte dieses Jahr ebenfalls gesundheitliche Probleme, was die finanzielle und emotionale Belastung noch verstärkt. Tierarztkosten, Medikamente und spezielles Futter für Maya sind zu einer zusätzlichen finanziellen Hürde geworden – eine, die Charly liebevoll trägt, aber nicht vollständig stemmen kann. Charlys größte Trostquelle ist gleichzeitig ihre größte Verantwortung, und sie tut alles, um beide am Leben zu erhalten.
