A little over one year ago, our dear Catherine (Sims) Kuiper was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called dermatomyositis. She had defended her dissertation the previous summer (while pregnant with her second son, Daniel) and was set to graduate with her Ph.D. from Notre Dame in May (which she did in a blaze of glory, laud, and honor). The family then remained in South Bend while Catherine held a post doc position for the past academic year. The disease became harder to manage when she became pregnant with little Anna Seraphim Pearl, who was born at the end of January. Since then, Catherine's condition has taken a serious downward turn, and in April she was sent to the hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for a week as her South Bend doctors could do no more for her. I have kept in touch with her throughout these past months as she's battled this illness and I am happy to report that she is finally getting the treatment that she needs, thanks be to God, and is still her brilliant, lovely self -- but she and her family are in serious need of our help, both spiritual and financial.
Andrew has been a full-time stay-at-home dad for the last 18 months, and he has most recently been an around-the-clock caregiver to their three young children and his very ill wife. While a path to recovery is now in sight for Catherine, the number of drug treatments and amount of physical therapy she will have to undergo is likely immense. This summer, she and her family will be relocating from South Bend to Hillsdale. However, what nest egg they had has been spent on medical bills, and I pray that this GoFundMe campaign will help relieve as much financial stress as possible so that Catherine can fully focus on recovering in the coming months and prepare for her new position at the college.
