Hello everyone, the purpose of this fundraiser is to give financial support for my dad Carlos Vicente-Sebastian and for the rest of our family. My dad underwent a liver transplant back in late February 2020 with the expectation that he would return back to his regular job within 3 1/2 months. Things were going well post surgery but that would suddenly change during the months of March through May.

Mi papá se sometió a un trasplante de hígado atrás a finales del febrero de 2020 con la expectativa que él devolvería atrás a su trabajo regular dentro de 3 meses 1/2. Las cosas iban bien la cirugía postal pero esto se cambiaría de repente durante los meses de Marzo a Mayo.
Unfortunately, he would experience multiple health complications that included fevers, sharp pain in his abdominal area, his skin yellowing and a lack of oxygen. These ordeals would inevitably result in him having to return back to the emergency room at the OHSU hospital numerous times. One moment he’s home with us, the next he’s having to spend several nights at the hospital alone. Each time before he went back to the hospital, we would cry and say his goodbyes to us because he didn’t know if he would come back or not. He would eventually receive the news that the reason for why he wasn’t doing so well was because he was dealing with something known as hepatopulmonary syndrome, which resulted in a lack of oxygen being delivered to his new liver. Furthermore, the numerous days of having to stay at the hospital and being away from the family have been an ordeal for him. Eventually, we all received news that he will have to undergo another liver transplant.

During the month of May 2020, he would eventually return back home but not before having a couple of more appointments that required incisions on his body. This included a mini tube on his right arm where magnesium and sodium lactate solution could enter his body order to strengthen his body and bones, since he was weakening. Furthermore, he has nephrostomy tubes connected to his kidney that help drain certain waste from his urine into two bags. He is also having to use an oxygen machine. In addition to the infusions and pills he has taken, he is also taking insulin since he’s also a diabetic. As you can see, my dad’s health has only been complicated more because of the unfortunate outcome with the new liver.

During these months, my dad has felt depressed, worried and has cried numerous times. My dad has told me that he has felt like a burden because he isn’t able to go back to work and provide for the family. He sees how everyone else in the family is trying to help out while he is stuck at home sitting on the couch or laying in bed and not being able to do much, except wait for when he will get another liver.

But this is where y’all can help my dad on his journey to see better days. As of lately, one of the bigger issues that we face is how we are going to be moving forward financially. During my dad’s initial liver transplant, he was approved for Washington state’s Family Paid and Medical Leave Program that allowed him to receive 12 weeks worth of financial support. But he has claimed all 12 weeks and we’re all uncertain of where we might get more financial support for him and the rest of our family, especially in this year 2020. That is where I hope this fundraiser will make a significant impact on our lives, especially my dad’s.

The money donated to this fundraiser will help to cover medical expenses, such as medications and medical bills. Furthermore, it would help with our rent, which is currently a little over a $1,500 and is eating the most of our money. It would also go towards buying food, car insurance, and other bills like utility, phone and any other unexpected medical bills that are not covered by his insurance. I would rather have my dad focus on his health, instead of stressing over where our family is going to get support financially. He’s told me that he feels a certain pain in his body whenever the thought of expenses crosses his mind.

That is why I am asking y’all to donate to this cause. There is no set timeline of when he might get his next liver transplant. He was approved to be on the waiting list a couple of months back. To give you an idea, it took him roughly five years to get his first liver transplant. Therefore, we are worried about the unknown and how we’re going to be moving forward financially.
