Help Candy Have Fibroid Surgery

This past year has been a monumental challenge for all of us. So when I first started feeling winded from walking down the street, I thought that perhaps it might be due to being more sedentary during quarantine; that maybe my heavier than normal periods were due to the stress and anxiety we all were feeling from going through a pandemic. However, as the months dragged on and the bleeding became a hemorrhage, I started to worry that something might be seriously wrong in my body. 

In March, my husband rushed me to the hospital when my hemoglobin dropped to a 5.2, almost 7 points below the normal 12-15 range. I had to receive a transfusion and was diagnosed with anemia caused by uterine fibroids. Despite changes to diet and lifestyle, these fibroids have continued to grow rapidly, causing my chronic bleeding to become worse than ever. If left unchecked, these fibroids threaten my fertility and the bleeding threatens my life.

Through research and referrals from friends, my husband and I have found a minimally invasive procedure that will stop the fibroids, give us the best chance at having a baby in the future, and allow me to get back to a normal, healthy life. Unfortunately, the procedure is expensive, most of it not covered by insurance, and our savings will not cover it all. On top of that, I start grad school in a month at UC-San Francisco to become a nurse midwife/women’s health nurse practitioner, so we are moving to the Bay Area, further adding to our expenses. 

We know that for many of you, this has been the most trying year of your lives. We certainly wouldn’t impose the full weight of this expense on anyone.
