<div>The playground at Sidi Bou Said park is the hub for our community's children. It is a crossroads for hundreds of families every week, a place for kids of all ages to come run, ride bikes and scooters, climb, swing and play — the crucial work of childhood — regardless of their means. That's because it is one of the only <strong>free to play</strong> playgrounds in the Banlieue Nord.

<div><strong>But the playground equipment, which was installed in 2021, is in dire disrepair.</strong> The ladder on the main play structure was missing all its rungs; wood planks were pried free from its roof leaving nails exposed; the spring toys were all broken and covered; the swing frames had no swings in them.

<div>In 2024, a small group of friends and neighbors got together with the mission to revamp the playground. Our initial goal was to work with the municipality to make basic repairs so the playground was safe and functional. Once we accomplished that, we began to dream bigger. <strong>We knew the children of our community deserved more, and also knew that our community could come together to make the dream of a better, free-to-play playground a reality. </strong>

<div>We've received the go-ahead from the municipality to raise money for an entirely new playground — <strong>one that is built on the values of play diversity, inclusivity, sustainability and safety.</strong> After extensive research, we selected <a href="https://www.kompan.com/en/int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kompan</a>, a top-of-the-line playground equipment manufacturer in Europe, for the equipment. A landscape architect and playground designer has kindly donated her time to create a vision of what the new playground can look like with <strong>incredible play equipment that is exciting, challenging, built-to-last and eco-friendly. </strong>

<div>The new design features seven new pieces of equipment, including a <strong>birds nest swing, </strong> <strong>monkey bars, spinner cups and poles, a tunnel for the littlest kids to explore and a massive space net climbing tower</strong> — something you'll not find at any other public park in Tunisia.

</div>

<div>Q: Won’t this equipment be broken in a year like the last playground was?
</div>
<div>A: No! The new equipment is from Kompan, a leading commercial playground manufacturer based in Europe, who has taken the heavy use (and potential misuse) of the playground into account and suggested pieces that are durable and low-maintenance. They built the playground at ACST in Tunis and know our climate and community well.

<div>Q. Shouldn’t the municipality pay for this? What’s their contribution?
</div>
<div>A. In an ideal world, yes. But we don’t live in an ideal world. The municipality funded stage 1 of the project, which was to repair the current play structures and install swings. However, a capital overhaul of the playground is far outside the budget for a small municipality in a country struggling with a public funding crisis. Many residents in the area — especially expats — don’t pay taxes in Tunisia, but still use the infrastructure. Think of it as a way of giving back if you enjoy that benefit.

<div>Q: Why should I fund something in Sidi Bou Said?
</div>
<div>A: Hopefully, you’ll fund it because you live nearby and will benefit directly from having a great place for your kids to play. But beyond that — the park is actually a destination for hundreds of kids each week from across the capital who can’t afford pay-for-play, and come with their families to enjoy an evening out, or with their school or creche to have a clean, safe place to play.

<div>Q: How do I know my donation won’t be used for another purpose, like paying salaries or funding another municipal project?
</div>
<div>A: All donations are being held by us, the community organizers, not the municipality. We will buy the equipment directly from the manufacturer, and pay contractors for installation and surfacing directly. 100% of funds raised — whether that’s $5,000 or $100,000 — will go to improving the playground.

<div>Q: What about the financials?
</div>
<div>A: Money raised from the GoFundMe is held in a 3.5% interest bearing USD account at WISE that was set up specifically for this purpose. Tunisian Dinars donated are held in an account at Bank Zitouna which was also set up specifically for the playground. Though it varies depending on how much we raise and which pieces we choose to buy, the rough breakdown of spending is: Equipment 65%, Shipping 10-15%, Installation 7-10%, Surfacing, 5-10%.

<div>L'aire de jeux du parc de Sidi Bou Saïd est un espace central pour les enfants de notre communauté. C'est un lieu de rencontre pour des centaines de familles chaque semaine, un endroit où les enfants de tous âges peuvent venir courir, faire du vélo et de la trottinette, grimper, se balancer, socialiser et jouer ensemble - activités cruciales de l'enfance - indépendamment de leurs moyens. En effet, il s'agit de l'une des seules aires de jeux gratuites de la Banlieue Nord.

<div>Malheureusement, l'équipement de l'aire de jeux, qui a été installé en 2021, est dans un état de délabrement avancé. L'échelle de la structure de jeu principale a perdu tous ses barreaux ; des planches de bois ont été arrachées du toit, laissant les clous à découvert ; les jouets à ressort sont tous cassés et recouverts de bâches ; les balançoires n'ont pas d’assise…

<div>En 2024, un petit groupe d'amis et de voisins s'est réuni, avec pour mission de rénover cette aire de jeux. Notre objectif initial était de travailler en étroite collaboration avec la municipalité pour effectuer des réparations de base afin que l'aire de jeux soit sûre et fonctionnelle. Une fois cette tâche accomplie, nous avons commencé à rêver plus grand. Nous savions que les enfants de notre communauté méritaient mieux, et nous savions aussi que notre communauté pouvait s'unir pour faire du rêve d'une meilleure aire de jeux gratuite, une réalité.

<div>Nous avons reçu le feu vert de la municipalité pour collecter des fonds en vue de la construction d'une aire de jeux entièrement nouvelle, fondée sur les valeurs de la diversité des jeux, de l'inclusion, de la durabilité et de la sécurité. Nous avons travaillé avec Kompan, un fabricant européen d'équipements d'aires de jeux haut de gamme, ainsi qu'avec une architecte paysagiste et conceptrice d'aires de jeux, qui a aimablement donné de son temps pour créer une vision étonnante de ce à quoi la nouvelle aire de jeux pourrait ressembler, avec des équipements de jeux incroyables, excitants, stimulants, construits pour durer et respectueux de l'environnement.

Les nouveaux équipements proviennent de Kompan, un fabricant européen leader dans le domaine des aires de jeux commerciales, qui a pris en compte l'utilisation intensive (et les éventuelles mauvaises utilisations) de l'aire de jeux et a proposé des équipements durables et nécessitant peu d'entretien. Cette entreprise a construit l'aire de jeux de l'ACST à Tunis et connaît bien notre climat et notre communauté.

<div>Q. La municipalité ne devrait-elle pas prendre en charge ces frais ? Quelle est sa contribution ?

<div>R. Dans un monde idéal, oui. Mais nous ne vivons pas dans un monde idéal. La municipalité a financé la première phase du projet, qui consistait à réparer les structures de jeux existantes et à installer des balançoires. Cependant, la rénovation complète de l'aire de jeux dépasse largement le budget d'une petite municipalité dans un pays en proie à une crise des finances publiques. De nombreux habitants de la quartier, en particulier les expatriés, ne paient pas d'impôts en Tunisie, mais utilisent tout de même les infrastructures. Considérez cela comme une façon de rendre la pareille si vous profitez de cet avantage.

Mais au-delà de cela, le parc est en fait une destination pour des centaines d'enfants chaque semaine, venus de toute la capitale, qui n'ont pas les moyens de payer pour jouer et qui viennent avec leur famille pour profiter d'une soirée en plein air, ou avec leur école ou leur crèche pour avoir un endroit propre et sûr où jouer.

<div>R : Tous les dons sont conservés par nous, les organisateurs communautaires, et non par la municipalité. Nous achèterons le matériel directement auprès du fabricant et paierons directement les entrepreneurs pour l'installation et le revêtement. 100 % des fonds collectés, qu'il s'agisse de 5 000 ou 100 000 dollars, seront consacrés à l'amélioration du aire de jeux.

Les dons en dinars tunisiens sont conservés sur un compte auprès de la Banque Zitouna, également ouvert spécialement pour le aire de jeux.
