Help Build Studio Kapu

Kapu

Kapu  is an experiment in art objects and the market. I attempt to enact a future for ethical and sustainable small business and creative spaces by repurposing neon scraps and turning them into structures. Kapu is meant for the interior, to be worn on the body, and the purposeful engagement in alternate economies.

Kapu launched in 2019 as a way to make ends meet by building beautiful objects for friends and family. Since its launch, Kapu has collaborated with various socially engaged artists, designers and educators to strengthen, empower and unite the community. From redistributing profits to First Nations organizations to maintain paying the rent for occupying stolen land, to prioritizing sliding scale and trade options to ensure accessibility and affordability amongst all community members: Kapu firmly believes in creating and operating in a market that is fundamentally focused on the communal uprising of Queer, Black, Indigenous and People of Colour.

Kapu is a meditation on pro liberation, anti colonial spaces that move with transparency and radical intentionality to grow away from exploitative practices - whether in the art world or in the financial market.

The Opportunity

I am ecstatic to announce that I have been given the opportunity to turn the garage of my childhood home into a studio space. Despite never previously working out of my own personal studio space, Kapu has experienced exponential growth over the last year and pieces now occupy shelves all over the world. Sky high NYC rent prices meant storing inventory and working out of a large studio was significantly out of my budget. As I expand, I exude gratitude for my parents' generosity in offering up their garage in the West of Sydney so I can further my practice. With this expansion, I aim to explore different mediums and formats of glass more intentionally. The studio will serve as a glass bending workshop and the official Kapu homebase. The space will also be used as one that prioritizes art education and I will rally with other Western Sydney artists to offer workshops, classes and community building initiatives.

Kapu would not be where it is today without the outpouring of support from it's community. Your contribution will help lay the foundations of a creative space  that embodies the possibility of building alternate worlds through radical imagination and collaboration.
