We are fundraising for the education of young, underprivileged and impoverished students in Sri Lanka.
This will be for a course called "industrial development studies" focusing on thinking ability, the learning of effective working skills, social entrepreneurship and sustainability. We are working closely with businesses so that by course end, students will come out with software and English language skills, equipped and ready for employment. A brighter future for all involved, students and businesses alike.
Simply giving money, and rations is not the solution to ending poverty anymore. Education with industrial skills is now needed for the younger generation to provide for themselves, their families and their community.
It will be a full-time course, five days a week, where students attend class from 9 am to 5pm for four of these days, including one whole day of on-site industrial training. The money we are collecting will go towards hiring specialized lecturers for a monthly cost of about 150 AUD. For a successful program, we need three lecturers for a total of six months (approx. 2700 AUD)
Sri Lanka has been a country engaged in 30 years of Civil War and Batticaloa is a city suppressed by this war. As a result the youth stand far back in education and development standards compared to other parts of Sri Lanka, yet alone the world. Some of these students have already lost their parents and many more come from a poor background with financial difficulties. Education without skills is just a piece of paper, worthless for achieving anything worthwhile. DreamSpace Academy is thus preparing 20 students (pilot program) to be educated comprehensively in industrial skills, who will be picked by employers for immediate employment after the completion of the program.
