Help Build Francess House in Buchanan, Liberia, West Africa
Good folks! Life in Liberia is very challenging. Poverty rules , and makes it hard to break even in life. Since the Coronavirus pandemic disrupted the world, we, my sister Victoria Almstrom, who lives in Sweden, and I, Lena Almstrom, living in Washington DC, are on a journey to make a difference in our half sister Francess Johnson’s life. Life is tough for Francess as she and her family faces the government issue restrictions of lockdown impacting their fishing community. Francess is a fish trader and lives in Fanti Town, Buchanan, Liberia, West Africa. We are seeking to uplift Francess out of poverty, and to transform her life and that of her own grown children and her grandchildren to live a better life. It takes a village to bring about change, and we are sharing our quest to make a difference in her life. In all, we are calling on the LAMCO era good folks, their network of family and friends to make a difference. While doing so, we are also inviting the world of good will folks to journey along with us, and we bring about change in Fanti Town, Buchanan, Liberia, West Africa. Francess Johnson - Fanti Town, Buchanan, Liberia, West Africa
Since the LAMCO years of the mid 1970's, Francess has lived in Fanti Town, Buchanan. There, she lived made ends meet learning the fish trader from her teen years, while living with our grandmother, who passed away in 1992. During the good years, before the Liberian Civil War staring in 1989, all was good. Then, Francess lived a decent life. She had her cement house, canoes, fishing nets, and a way of making a living. Then, things changed in the 1990s. The Liberian Civil War from 1989 to 2003 was cruel and brutal. Fanti Town, Buchanan, was ground "zero". Francess yard was rebel held territory. She fled Buchanan, with her children in tow, and they ended up in the interior land during the war years. There, away from the Fanti Town fishing village life, Francess had to fight the odds for her own survival, and that of her children, totaling eleven, and grandchildren. Francess lost a few of her children to the war and water borne diseases. When peace returned to Liberia, with the help of the United Nation peacekeeping forces, Francess returned to Fanti Town, Buchanan, reclaimed her land and had to start all over. It was rough and tough. Everything was lost, and Francess had to start all over.

The Francess House project is a year long project . We are are om a misson to build a three bedroom cement house far from the shoreline, with an indoors kitchen, showers and toilets. We also plan to add solar panels on the rooftop to generate daily electricity. In the courtyard, we will construct a deep well, and install a hand operated water pump for safe drinking water. With better living conditions, she can concentrate on her fish trading business to generate more income to live a better life and provide for family. We truly appreciate any kind of donations. It will go a long way to make a difference in Frances life and that of her gronchildren and grandchildren.
The Need - Engineering and Construction Contributions
To accomplish our goal to build Francess House, it will take a lot of financial resources. Therefore, my sister Victoria and I are reaching out to all helping hands. We look forward to connecting with other former LAMCO employees that may be interested in lending their professional connections or expertise to our Francess House project in 2020 and beyond. Professional referrals and contacts to non-profit organizations, businesses, and individuals with engineering or construction expertise is highly appreciated and very welcome.

For now, from the LAMCO in Liberia years, we have our Project Manager Mr. Christian T. Williams, who is a former LAMCO railway engineer, and civil engineer Mr. Ashley Warner. Both of them are current employees of ArcelorMittal, the new mining company operating the old LAMCO mine and harbor in Buchanan, Liberia. We are thankful for their support, expertise, and on the ground commitment to Francess House project.
