Help Build a Memorial for Jake Jakabosky

Donation protected
My wonderful husband, Jake (Joel) Jakabosky passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. We had just returned from a three-week birding and camping trip through eastern Oregon, when he somehow contracted an aggressive MRSA infection. It spread through his blood and brain, and he was gone in four days. The speed with which it happened shocked everyone!

It has warmed my heart to hear from so many people how much they liked him, what a loss they thought it was, and how valuable they thought he was to our community. It inspired me to think of doing a memorial to Jake that would both symbolize Jake and his place in the community and give everyone the opportunity to take part in making it happen. What I came up with is wonderfully appropriate because it would relate to his love of birding, his appreciation of nature, his involvement with the High Prairie Fire District, and his commitment to the community.

My proposal is to build a small shelter on the far northwest corner of the High Prairie Fire District's Struck Road property, overlooking a picturesque pond on the adjacent property. Its primary purpose would be to serve as a bird blind (for observing birds and other wildlife at close quarters without being seen), but it could also be used just to sit and enjoy the view of the pond, meditate, enjoy a small picnic, and more. There would be a path leading to it and a special sign remembering Jake. It would turn a not-very-useful corner of the property into a lovely space for the community.

The details of the design are still being developed. I've given it a lot of thought, and architect Rick Carlson is turning the ideas into a plan.

So far, everyone who's heard the idea has been instantly enthusiastic and has offered to help. They liked the idea of doing something to remember Jake, and they liked how right for Jake this memorial would be. I think it will draw lots of participation from the community.

Although we intend to keep the costs of building this memorial as low as possible, we also want it to be solidly built and of good quality so it will serve the community for a long time to come. That will require some money, so I'm asking you to support this memorial to Jake by making a donation to the project.

Thank you from my heart,

Gwen
